At its regular meeting Aug. 19, the
Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue (SVFR)

statement of Fire Chief Jim Langborg. Part
of that included solidifying leadership with-
in the board.
“As you all know, the chain of command
is a really important thing in any organiza-
tion,” board member John Scott said.
“We’ve got the board, the board president,
the chief and then staff, in that order.”
Scott referenced the “period of turbu-
lence in our recent history,” when Board
President John Carnahan presented the first
motion to dismiss Langborg.
“I think this creates a very awkward situ-
ation, since the board president and the
chief have to be in daily contact,” Scott said.
“I’m at the point where I throw it out to
John (Carnahan) and say the best thing he
can do is resign his presidency.”
Scott was careful to say that no longer
being president would not affect Carnahan’s
membership on the board.
Carnahan said, “I believe that we’re here
to make the fire department successful. I
had not changed my mind by the end of the
meeting, but the board did. ... When that
decision is made, it’s a board decision, and
not a personal decision.”

Mapleton
gears up for
school year
District to launch all-day
kindergarten, school-wide
post-grad success program

Mapleton School District registration is
Monday, Aug. 24, and Tuesday, Aug. 25,
from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. each
day. Kindergarten students and new elemen-
tary students can register at the elementary
school office during those hours.
All middle and high school students must
register at the high school office.
On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the district will
hold an elementary school meet and greet
from 1 to 3 p.m. Students are invited to
come to the elementary school, meet the
teachers and drop off school supplies.
