To be
Frank was
to be a giant
Truly, there can be no
professional sports without
an announcer. It just doesn’t
work any other way.
Think about it: when you
were a kid, playing football
or baseball down the street
and ruining Mrs. Johnson’s
front yard, the voices you
heard in your head weren’t
the kind that got you put
away upstate for awhile,
they were the dulcet tones
of the many maestros of the
microphone.
To the untrained eye,
sure, you were a 16-year-
old string bean wearing
sweat pants, but when you
went up for the Nerf, you
were like Lynn Swann, and
when you ran unabated into
the end-zone, you followed
in the well-worn footsteps
of Tony Dorsett or Walter
Payton.

H
ead Coach Tim Dodson and other coaches taught student football players warm-ups, form, skill
training and games at this week’s football summer camp at Siuslaw High School. For the second
year, students in kindergarten through fourth grade were part of the camp, with 27 students.
There were another 30 to 40 students in grades 5 through 8. The players learned new skills each day of
the four-day camp, building on previous knowledge until they could play games of scrimmage. Senior
members of the high school’s football team and other volunteers also helped coach.

Cutthroat trout
The cutthroat trout fish-
ery is slow to fair. Fishing
during the early mornings
or in the larger tributaries
is the most productive.
River conditions are very
low and warm for this time
of year. Bait is not allowed
above the head of tide but
small spinners, spoons and
fly fishing can be very pro-
ductive.
Cutthroat trout
The cutthroat trout fish-
ery is fair in the mainstem
and in some of the large
tributaries. With the low
and warm river conditions
the best opportunities will
be in the early morning
when water temperatures
are the coolest. Small spin-
ners are typically produc-
tive as wells as small
spoons or fly fishing with
nymphs or streamers.

WEEKLY
Softball season closes with tournament Aug. 22-23
Wednesday, Aug. 19, is
the last day of regular sea-
son play for the Florence
Softball League.
With the close of the sea-
son is the much anticipated
Florence Softball League
Tournament at Miller Park.
This year’s tournament
will be played on Saturday,
Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug.
23.
Saturday will be a two
pool round robin play with
seeding for the tournament
based on a team’s average
run differential.
The first round of the
tournament will be played
Saturday evening just after
round robin play finishes.
The second, third and final
round of the tournament
will be on Sunday.
The BoxLunch food
truck will be at Miller Park
serving the league and the
spectators on Sunday. This
year, it offers a $10 special,
“the Grand Slam Burger.”
BoxLunch will donate $2 of
every sale of the special to
the Florence Softball
League.
“This is very exciting,”
said Sean Campbell, who is
with the league. “We would
like as much support as we
can. Tell your friends and
family to come on down
and get a burger and help
support the league. Hope to
see everyone out there!”
The co-ed league sched-
uled a total of 90 games
between June, July and
August this year, playing
two games each Wednesday
and Thursday at Miller
Park.
Spectators are welcome
at all games, which are
family-friendly and alcohol
free.

now offering the convenience of online registra-
tion for athletics through FamilyID, a secure reg-
istration platform that provides an easy, user-
friendly way to register for programs.
The system keeps track of the information
entered in each FamilyID profile.
A family only needs to enter its information
once for each family member for multiple uses
and multiple programs.
Register and find more information at

Steelhead, cutthroat trout
Summer steelhead fish-
ing is fair in the upper
river. Low flows and
warming river tempera-
tures are making new fish
race up into the cooler
holding waters of the gorge
area. New fish will contin-
ually be moving into the
river through the summer
with peak numbers typical-
ly in July.
River flows are much
lower than normal for this
time of year so think small
and subtle presentations.
Typical steelhead tactics
apply such as bobber and
jig/bait, or casting spoons
or spinners.
Cutthroat trout are now
also open to harvest and
can be found throughout
the main stem river and
many large tributaries.
WILSON RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook, cut-
throat
Spring Chinook fishing
is slow in the low clear
water. Summer steelhead
fishing is slow also.
Fishing for cutthroat trout
should be fair. Use lighter
gear for best results as the
water is extremely low and
clear.
YAQUINA RIVER:
Cutthroat trout
Cutthroat trout fishing is
slow to fair. The best
opportunities are coming in
the early mornings when
