Disaster prep main focus of ‘Our Town’
Disaster preparation, the
Relay for Life, Habitat for
Humanity
and
Siuslaw
Outreach Services will be in
the spotlight during this week's
episode of Our Town on Coast
Radio KCST FM.
The locally produced com-
munity service program will
feature extended conversations
with a variety of people on
those four topics.
Most of the time will be
spent talking about disaster
preparedness.
A single story in the New
Yorker magazine last month
Florence City Wide
Garage Sale
September 11-13, 2015
presented by
the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce
did more than hundreds of
town hall meetings and disaster
preparedness workshops to
raise the awareness of the like-
lihood of a devastating earth-
quake and coast-wrecking
tsunami along the Oregon
coast.
That story has been shared
on social media, has prompted
countless discussions and per-
haps most importantly, caused
a lot of people to take seriously
the need to have an emergency
cache of supplies at home.
Online retailers of disaster
kits are saying their most popu-
lar items are on back order and
they’ve done more business in
recent weeks than they remem-
ber.
Key members of a local
coalition that formed 10 years
ago following a similar disaster
in Indonesia are also trying to
capitalize on the attention cre-
ated by the New Yorker maga-
zine story about the Cascadia
Subduction Zone.
Several members of the West
Lane Emergency Operations
Group (WLEOG) will be in the
studio with Our Town host Bob
Sneddon. WLEOG consists of
eight agencies, and about a
dozen more affiliated groups.
They meet regularly to talk
about planning for a large scale
disaster; and how to work on
recovery.
They don’t focus strictly on
earthquakes and tsunamis.
Their scope of work also
WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
includes things like major
storms, chemical spills, wild-
fire, and just about anything
else that would require a wide-
spread emergency response.
WLEOG
chairwoman
Megan Messmer, Florence
Police Chief Tom Turner,
Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue
Chief Jim Langborg, and Lane
County Emergency Manager
Linda Cook will be in the stu-
dio Wednesday from 4 to 6
p.m. to talk about their work so
far.
Joining the conversation by
phone will be Althea Rizzo, the
Geologic Hazards Coordinator
for
Oregon
Emergency
Management.
Three other topics will be
discussed on today’s edition of
Our Town.
The American
Cancer
Society Relay for Life has been
raising awareness and money
for cancer research and advo-
cacy in Florence since 2000.
The 16th annual Florence
Relay is set for this weekend,
Aug. 8, and co-chair Nicole
Hundley says there will be a
few changes.
The biggest is that instead of
running 24 hours on the walk-
ing path at Miller Park, it will
only be 12 hours long.
Opening ceremonies are set
for noon Saturday. Hundley
will talk about the schedule, as
well as how much money they
hope to raise.
Siuslaw Outreach Services’
David Wiegan will talk about a
recently completed remodel at
SOS. Wiegan is the executive
director for the multi-cause
agency that provides services
to victims of domestic and sex-
ual abuse, low income families
and the homeless in our area.
A new roof and internal
remodeling of its 60-year-old
building will allow them to
focus more on their mission
and less on mopping the floors
after a rain storm.
The final topic on Our Town
will be a conversation with
Kate McBroom Redwine and
Ken Gaylord with Habitat for
Humanity. The organization
recently broke ground on its
27th home; but they are also
spending a great deal of time
working on revitalizing neigh-
borhoods and helping people
make home repairs that they
may not otherwise be able to
afford.
Our Town airs three times
this week on Coast Radio. The
first is today, Aug. 5, on KCST
106.9 FM, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Two encore airings of the
show can be heard on KCFM,
AM 1250, FM 104.1 and FM
103.1.
Those airings will be at 10
a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, then
again Sunday morning, Aug. 9,
at 10 a.m.
Individual segments of
Coast Radio's Our Town can
also be played on demand at
