Wildfire risk soars in Lane, Linn counties
Ongoing drought and warm
weather have elevated wildfire
danger this summer, and severe
conditions forecast for the rest
of this week could cause it to
soar.
“The potential for fires to
start and then grow rapidly will
be high due to hot temperatures
and low humidity,” said Greg
Wagenblast, ODF’s South
Cascade District forester.
Already in Lane and Linn
counties, a number of timber
companies have closed their
lands to the public due to the
risk of human-caused fires.
Recreationists can learn
which corporate forestlands in
the district are open by check-
ing the ODF website, www.
oregon.gov/odf/FIRE/Closures
/Corporate%20Closures.pdf.
The district forester said it is
important to remember that
fuels in the wildland areas are
primed to burn. The intensity
of fire starts under the current
conditions would require more
firefighting resources.
And once on site, firefighters
will face limited sources of
water in streams and reservoirs
to extinguish the fires. Jude
McHugh, public affairs officer
with the Willamette National
Forest, said fire conditions are
similar on U.S. Forest Service
lands.
“Unfortunately, the Willamette
National Forest this year as of
July 21 has had 47 human-
caused fires out of 103 total
fires,” she said.
The PIO advised visitors to
the Willamette that “campfires
are allowed only in designated
campgrounds with fire rings
and need to be ‘dead out’ when
leaving your campsite.”
Wagenblast
likewise
reminded recreationists visiting
state-protected forestlands and
parks to be particularly aware
of the wildfire risk. As on the
National Forest, campfires and
other open fires on ODF’s pro-
tection jurisdiction are prohib-
ited except in designated camp-
grounds.
Motorized vehicles must be
operated only on established
roads. Smoking is restricted to
inside closed vehicles or build-
ings.
Other fire safety restrictions
can be obtained by contacting
the jurisdictional agency.
City breaks ground on Bridge work planned in
Rhody Drive project
western Lane County
Community invited to groundbreaking
ceremony Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, at
12:30 p.m., Florence Mayor
Joe Henry and the Florence
City Council will be joined by
city staff for the groundbreak-
ing of the Rhododendron
Drive preservation project at
the
intersection
of
Rhododendron Drive and 11th
Street. The community is
invited to attend.
Construction is scheduled to
start the following week on
Monday, Aug. 10.
This $254,000 paving proj-
ect along Rhododendron
Drive, between 11th and
Wildwinds streets, will only
address the travel lanes of the
roadway and will not extend or
enlarge the existing roadway
shoulders at this time.
Extension of the shoulder is
anticipated to begin summer
2016.
The project will grind or
“cold plane” the existing street
surface to a depth of two inch-
es, then inlay and pave back
the street with a new asphalt
cement wearing surface.
The project also includes
digging out and reconstructing
250 square yards of roadway
area to address a road-base
failure area.
Oregon Department of
Transportation bridge mainte-
nance crews will be placing
new deck overlays on several
ramps and bridges in western
Lane County in August, creat-
ing closures or lane restric-
tions for motorists.
On Aug. 5, crews will be
working on the bridge over
Deadwood Creek (MP 13.09)
on OR 36 (Mapleton-Junction
City Highway), between 9
p.m. and 6 a.m. During this
time, the bridge will be closed.
There is no detour.
On Aug. 6 and 7, crews will
be working on the bridge over
Wildcat Creek (MP 27.38) on
OR 126W (Florence-Eugene
Highway), between 10 p.m.
and 6 a.m. During this time,
flaggers will control a single
lane of traffic. Expect short
delays.
This schedule is weather
dependent and subject to
changes.
Electronic message boards
will be placed in the areas to
alert travelers to schedule
changes.
