DISTRACTED DRIVING | PARENTING SHS Class of 1975 planning reunion How Adults Can Help A s with many major issues, addressing distracted driving starts at home. Parents can make a major impact on the driving habits of their children, especially if they have teenagers with little experience on the road. This can start by simply leading by example. Your chil- dren are watching your every move — even when it comes to driving. Are you constantly distract- ed by incoming phone calls, text messages or emails? Do you occasionally break the law by sending a text message or answering your phone while driving? These behaviors might seem minor to you but you’re setting a pattern of behavior that could be followed by your children. You can lead by example by ignoring incoming phone alerts. Tell your children that you just received a text, but you’re waiting until you reach your destination to check and reply to it. Lions Club to host yard sale The Florence-Siuslaw Lions Club is inviting vendors to par- ticipate in its upcoming Multi- Family Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale is at the Coffindaffer residence, 5495 North Fork Road. Set-up time begins at 7 a.m., and the sale opens to the public at 9 a.m. To reserve a space, contact Linda Brown at 541- 997-3320. LCC seeks volunteers for ESL program TALK ABOUT THE ISSUE When you see a story on the news covering the topic of a teenager’s death due to dis- tracted driving, don’t change the channel. Call in your chil- dren to talk about what hap- pened. How could the accident have been avoided? What actions might the victim have been able to take to keep him- self or herself safer on the road? Honest dialogue about what kind of damage distract- ed driving can cause is the Siuslaw High School Class of 1975’s 40th reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 15. There will be a potluck lunch at the boat ramp area between the second and and third bridge at noon. Dinner will be at 7:30 p.m. at Pier Point Inn. Who knows, the next time your child thinks about checking her texts while driving, she may just remem- ber your words of wisdom and choose to wait until she safely reaches her destination. TEACH DEFENSIVE DRIVING Not every victim of an acci- dent caused by distracted driving is the one actually answering a phone call or sending a text. That’s why it’s important to teach your chil- dren to be heads-up drivers. Watch for oncoming traffic at all times, especially at intersections or on hilly, rural roads. Teach your young driv- ers to trust only themselves on the road and to be ready for others who may not be paying attention.
