FRAA to host outdoor
moving sale Aug. 8
Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA) will have an
outdoor parking lot moving
sale (or indoors, depending on
the weather), Saturday, Aug. 8,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sale will be at 4969
Highway 101, Munsel Lake
Plaza, just north of Fred
Meyer, in the back parking lot
area.
Come early for coffee and
doughnuts.
Members and friends are
asked to bring household items
and other treasures they would
like to donate to the Art Center
on Friday, Aug. 7, between 10
a.m. and 2 p.m.
Items should be priced
before bringing them to
donate.
In addition, FRAA is selling
53 metal display screens, 6
feet tall by 30 inches wide, and
carpeted fabric office dividers
of various sizes — all priced to
sell quickly.
Other large items include
two dining room table and
chair sets, a baker’s rack, and
storage cabinet. There will be
clothing, shoes, bedding,
vases, baskets, art supplies,
knick-knacks and more.
Look for details in the
Siuslaw News “Garage Sale”
section the week before the
event.
FRAA is a nonprofit organi-
zation, and proceeds from this
sale will help to defray the
moving costs as it establishes
residency in its new Old Town
location, 120 Maple St., begin-
ning Wednesday, Sept. 2.

COMING UP ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2015: PARENTING | HOW ADULTS CAN HELP
How Technology Can Help
T
As teen drivers rely on their
cell phones more than ever
before, it may sound counter-
productive to suggest that
technology can help keep more
of the safe on the roadways.
But many new devices are
proving otherwise. Automobile
manufacturers are engineering
their newest concepts with
safety in mind. In fact, the
overall features of new cars
may look much different in 20
years than today’s models, even
if the external appearances
remain largely unchanged.
The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, federal
government and other road
safety groups across the world
are also working to make dis-
tracted driving a thing of the
past. Major initiatives are
underway, including an inno-
vative $30 million project to
expand the Vehicle Research
Center in Ruckersville, Va.
An enlarged outdoor track at
the expanded center provides
ample space for high-speed
maneuvers and accurate evalu-
ation of front crash prevention
systems. More intensive testing
like this will help driver safety
advance to new levels.

PREVENTION
The major solution to dis-

everyday activities is blamed for much
of the issues related to distracted driving.
such as autonomous braking
or out-of-lane alerts can make
a difference in helping correct
common driving behaviors
caused by distractions.

TECHNOLOGY
A group of federal and
state agencies, research
organizations and automak-
ers is developing vehi-
cle-to-vehicle and vehi-
cle-to-infrastructure com-
munications platforms,
which, according to the
NHTSA, could potentially
address about 80 percent of
crashes involving non-im-
paired drivers.

venes for drivers when they
aren’t paying attention.
Drivers get into fewer
crashes when their vehicles
are equipped with front crash
prevention systems, and new
technology is on the way to
connect vehicles to each
other and roadway infra-
structure to alleviate crashes.

The technology would
allow cars to communicate
with each other and roadway
infrastructure to help ease
congestion and avoid acci-
dents.
The NHTSA is working on
how vehicle-to-vehicle com-
munication technology
would roll out to passenger
vehicles. Stay tuned.
Starting Monday, the week
leading up to Relay For Life
of Florence will feature a
decorating competition to see
which local business can
“purple” their location the
best to raise awareness for
the American Cancer Society
and Relay For Life.
The competition runs the
week of Aug. 3 through 7,
with judging and awards held
on Friday, Aug. 7.
Relay For Life of Florence
is Saturday, Aug. 8, from
noon to midnight at Miller
Park.
The Relay Committee is
hoping to “paint the town
purple” in anticipation of the
event.
