of Florence starts in August

Oregon Department of
Transportation (ODOT) will
begin a major paving project
north of Florence on
Highway 101 in August. This
two-year project will work on
paving and curve widening.
The “Highway 101:
Cook’s Chasm to Sutton
Creek” project, which covers
a 17-mile segment of
Highway 101 in Lane
County, between mileposts
167 and 184, will replace
failing pavement and con-
struct safety improvements
that will benefit bicyclists,
pedestrians and motorists.
Rocky Mountain Con-
struction, LLC, of Klamath
Falls, was awarded the low-
bid contract of $9.6 million.
According to ODOT
spokesman Rick Little, the
pavement within this section
of Highway 101 is failing and
in need of replacement.
He said the pavement core
samples have indicated pave-
ment failure from 2 to 4 inch-
es depth in many locations.
Several curves have been
identified as needing safety
enhancements to reduce large
vehicle off-tracking outside
of the travel lane. The curves
will be widened to enhance
safety.
Center line rumble strips
also will be installed to
reduce the chance of cross-
over accidents.

Center
to reopen
this fall

programs designed to help
boost graduation rates

he newly painted and remodeled
Boys and Girls Club of Western
Lane County Teen Center will
reopen in September, coinciding with
the start of the 2015-16 school year.
The center, located at 1601 15th St.,
will be open to all Boys and Girls Club
members in grades seven through 12
from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through
Thursday, and 2 to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
The remodel is not the only improve-
ment afoot. Three specific programs
adopted from the Boys and Girls Club of
America
curriculum
specifically
designed to help increase student gradu-
ation rates have been added to the club’s
after school agenda.
“These are national programs that the

the country

tion rates to
the 90 percent
range,” club

don’t have. We are going to take advan-
tage of work that has already been done
and has been proven across the state of
Oregon and nationally.”
Trent said the three programs are
“Power Hour,” “Money Management”
and “Project Learn.”
“‘Power Hour — Making Minutes
Count’ is from 3 to 4 p.m., Monday
through Thursday during the school year,”
Trent said. “This program helps club mem-
bers succeed academically by providing
homework help, extra credit, tutoring and
high-yield learning activities.”

Emergency agencies train for active shooters, integrate forces

In a continuation of the ALICE
(Alert-Lockdown-Inform-Counter-
Evacuate) training held in June,
Florence Police Department,
Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and
Western Lane Ambulance District
joined the Lane County Sheriff’s
Office (LCSO) in an active shooter
training session July 23 at Siuslaw
High School.
LCSO regularly participates in
full-day training exercises to ensure
that it is ready to respond to a vari-
ety of incidents.

operations agencies participate in an active
shooter training at Siuslaw High School.
Turner said, “Our department is
very interested in participating in
every bit of training we can get.”
He added that this training ses-
sion is similar to other trainings
going on across the nation to pre-
pare for active shooter scenarios.
One sheriff’s deputy said, “We’re
changing our tactics to get person-
nel in sooner.”
This means that paramedics, fire-
fighters and other emergency med-
ical personnel can enter an active
situation to provide care to civilians
while law enforcement handles the
active threat.
