Algae health risks to be discussed by SWC
The Siuslaw Watershed
Council (SWC) will host a
presentation by Dr. Tim Otten
of Oregon State University on
source tracking and public
health risk assessment for
blue-green algae blooms in
lakes and downstream water
bodies.
This presentation will take
place Wednesday, July 29, at
6:30 p.m., in the West
Woahink Meeting Hall (Yurt)
in Honeyman Park, off Canary
Road south of Florence.
New scientific tools and
data will be described which
have expanded our knowledge
on the distribution of toxins
and health risks beyond the
fresh-water lake sources to
connected waterways and
even ocean estuaries.
The subject is of particular
interest as the season
approaches for early fall
warm-water lake blooms.
In addition, Paul Burns
with the Siuslaw National
Forest will provide a progress
update for the major habitat
restoration project underway
on the Fivemile and Bell
Creek
tributaries
of
Tahkenitch Lake. The four-
mile, 600-acre project will
expand and enhance the habi-
tat available for the success of
Coho salmon which spawn
and rear in this tributary, and
will also benefit many other
wildlife species.
The public is invited to all
SWC general meetings.
For more information, call
the SWC at 541-268-3044,
email watershed@siuslaw.
org, or visit www.siuslaw.org.
SWC meetings are made
possible by an Oregon
Watershed
Enhancement
Board grant, federal grants
and individual and business
donors.
Line break shuts down
water for Siltcoos campers
Campers staying in Siuslaw
National Forest campgrounds
along the Siltcoos recreation
corridor, seven miles south of
Florence, need to supply their
own drinking water because of
a break in an underground
water line.
The break was discovered
July 21, prompting the shut-
down of flush toilets, showers
and water faucets at the follow-
ing recreation sites: Driftwood
II, Lagoon and Waxmyrtle
campgrounds.
Portable toilets have been
brought into the affected areas,
but visitors should supply their
own drinking water.
Forest Service staff is work-
ing to identify the location of
the leak and hope to have full
services back to the camp-
grounds by the end of July.
