BRANDT—Vonda Ellen
Brandt, 79, passed away peace-
fully in her
sleep
on
Sunday, July
12, 2015, in
Bend, Ore.
Vo n d a
was born in
Adrian,
Mo.,
on
Sept.
20,
Vonda Brandt
1935, to Ted
and Gertrude Van Benthusen.
She was the fourth of six
girls.
Her dad was a farmer who
kept trying for a boy. Vonda
ended up being his “boy” and
worked on the family farm.
Vonda married Marlan
Brandt in 1963 and together
raised their two children Melisa
and Kevin, until Marlan passed
away in 2003.
Vonda and her family moved
to Florence, Ore., in 1979 from
Woodland Hills, Calif. She
worked at Siuslaw Valley Bank
and was a long-time member of
the Florence Nazarene Church.
Vonda was blessed with a
fun, loving spirit, valued hard
work and family. She had a true
love for life, her family, friends
and the Lord she served, which
all shone brightly through her
contagious smile.
She will be remembered as a
fun-loving, adventure-seeking
gal, whether it be to a foreign
land, on the quest for the ulti-
mate bargain or to just grab a
quick bite to eat with friends or
family (sweets were her
favorite).
It was a high priority to her
to have a close-knit family and
she made sure they knew this
with frequent visits or calls,
which they never needed
because they knew.
Vonda is survived by her sis-
ters Bonnie Dockery and
Shirley McManama (Harper);
her daughter Melisa and son-in-
law Todd Sween; her son Kevin
and daughter-in-law Gina
Brandt; and four grandchildren,
Kylie, Jared, Seth and T.J.
A memorial service for
Vonda will be held Saturday,
July 25, at 11 a.m. at the
Florence Nazarene Church. In
lieu of flowers, donations can
be made in memory of Vonda to
Siuslaw Outreach Services of
Florence, florencesos.org.
Burns’s Riverside Chapel
Florence Funeral Home is in
Rhody Drive construction
starts Monday, July 27
The City of Florence reports
that portions of Rhododendron
Drive will be closed starting
Monday, July 27.
Chip and fog seal work will
require the closure of Rhody
Drive from 35th Street to
Lighthouse Way the week of
July 27 to July 31.
The project consists of a
single layer chip seal which is
an application of emulsified
asphalt and a layer of fine
aggregate. The aggregate is
then rolled to embed it into the
emulsified asphalt. This is
used as a pavement preserva-
tion treatment and provides a
new skid-resistant wearing
surface, arrests raveling and
seals minor cracks.
Once the chip seal is set, a
fog seal is applied.
Due to the nature of the
project there will be slight
inconveniences, particularly to
the residents that live along the
construction route.
Letters were sent out to res-
idents and property owners
along and adjacent to the
affected
portions
of
Rhododendron Drive.
Provisions for local access
will be provided during con-
struction and detour signs will
be installed.
Street closures will be limit-
ed for just the period that it
takes to apply the chip and fog
seal.
A fog seal protects the chip
seal from harmful UV rays
that deteriorate the chip seal
over time; seals the chip seal
from the top down virtually
eliminating all loose rock that
is generally associated with
chip seals; and they add to the
overall appearance of chip
seals making them look like an
ultra-thin overlay.
In addition, fog seals mini-
mize “whip off” and damage
to windshields that can happen
with a chip seal only applica-
tion.
A fog seal also provides a
better appearance and may
improve the ride quality and
tire noise.

this project, contact City of
Florence Public Works at 541-
