I suppose there will come a day when a woman’s looks aren’t factored into her sporting prowess, but I’m guessing that day will not be coming very soon. The comments and con- jecture engendered by Serena Williams at Wimbledon and the women’s World Cup pro- vided more than enough fodder for that thought. With a broad brush, Serena was alternately described as having a “manly physique,” or, dressing like a “Disney princess” for the Champion’s Ball. Many of the athletes on the field for the Cup were physically described in the usual See VIEW 4B S PORTS Calendar July 18 M APLETON EQUESTRIANS ROPE HIGH MARKS AT STATE B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Mapleton’s equestrian team recently wrapped up its season by saddling up for state competition. Following a long couple of months, during which there was talk of a cancelation for the state meet, Geddes brothers — Chet and Jd — competed in three events each. Both took to the arena for roping and steer daubing individually, then together in the team penning event. Each caught one cow in roping, with Chet earning fourth place and Jd finishing eighth. In steer daubing, the bronze went to Chet with a third-place finish and Jd placed 23rd. When it came time for team pen- ning, generally a three-man team, the two Geddes brothers penned all three head of cattle on their final attempt. Watching from the stands, their mother Trisha Geddes said the pride she felt brought tears to her eyes. “I couldn’t help but be a proud momma,” she said. At the awards presentation, Candi Bothum announced the results by say- ing, “Mapleton is only a two-man team? Really? OK, then.” The Geddes brothers’ performance earned them fifth place overall at state. “Placing that high in a three-man event with only two riders sure shows their ability to work as a team,” said COURTESY PHOTO From left: Chet Geddes with Cottage Grove rider and friend Ty Schuellar, and fellow Mapleton rider and brother Jd Geddes. Trisha Geddes. “That is really what our team is about.” The top five in each event qualify to continue on to the regional meet against equestrians from Washington. Unfortunately, there will be no region- al meet this year due to cancelations. “We are obviously very disappoint- ed,” said Geddes. “The boys would have qualified for team penning, and Chet would have gone on to compete in both roping and steer daubing.” In the meantime, Geddes says the team is already looking for any Siuslaw or Mapleton athletes, grades nine through 12, who are interested See STATE 3B • TRC BASEBALL S ANDBLASTERS VS C ANYON C RUSHERS AT R EGIS H.S. 2 P . Racing on his Redline 501cc YFZ- model ATV, Armstrong was able to answer the call during an event based on rules similar to those on the popular TV drag race show “Street Outlaws.” ATV racers wanting to get on the list can “call out” top-10 racers by chal- lenging them for their position at a race-off held once a month. Armstrong successfully defended his position against a challenger from Washington during last week’s race to keep his ninth-place ranking in the Northwest. The 1 through 8 rankings are racers with engine sizes ranging from 800cc to 1187cc. “It’s a privilege for me and my pro stock Yamaha to be on the ‘Northwest Top-10 Fastest’ list and be in such fast company,” Armstrong said after the race. “What’s fun about grudge racing L OCAL A THE LOCAL REGION www.dfw.state.or.us/RR NORTH COAST LAKES: DIRT-N-DUNEZ PHOTOGRAPHY Florence sand-drag racer Gary “Gee” Armstrong leaves the starting line in a “grudge” race against a Washington racer. is that it’s about racing skill, getting down the track to the finish line first, and without making any mistakes — not just engine size.” The next Friday Night Grudge PLAYER COULD REACH Racing will be Aug. 7 at Albany Sand Drags.
