Leaving Time

Book review by Susie Voth
Have you ever read a book
that you hate to put down? The
story is so engaging, interesting
and informative that you just
want to read even though the
timer went off and dinner is
ready to take out of the oven?
For me, right now, “Leaving
Time” by Jodi Picoult is that
book. I “sneak read” when my
husband, Wesley, goes into the
kitchen for 30 seconds to get a
drink of water.
“Leaving Time” is told by
four characters. Jenna is a 13
year-old girl missing a mother.
Her mission in life is to find her
mother, whatever it takes. Virgil
is a former police detective and
the case of Alice Metcalf is the
one that haunts his days, disrupts
his nights and ultimately causes
him to seek solace in a bottle of
Jack Daniels. Serenity is a has-
been psychic, once very famous
until her fall from grace. And
Alice is the voice of the missing,
she speaks from the past,
informing the reader of her life
and life decisions.
And there are elephants. I love
the bits about the elephants,
although I find the facts and
information sad, so sad.
In the author’s note, Picoult
shares some of her research
regarding elephants. According
to her notes, all of the elephant
characters (and they are definite-
ly characters) featured in the
book are based on real elephants
that have at one time lived a less
than happy life in a circus or a
zoo.

This book has been so good
that I am writing the review prior
to finishing the book. My guess
is that it will make Susie’s Top
Five books of 2015. A definite
favorite!
Concert: History of
Folk Music
On Saturday, July 18, at 6
p.m., the library will present
Laurie Jennings Oudin and Dana
Keller, an award-winning,
nationally touring duo. They
will take you on a folk music
journey through the early part of
the 20th century, sharing songs
from Jimmy Rogers, Woody
5 A
Guthrie, The Carter Family and
many more, exploring the signif-
icance and impact these early
songwriting pioneers had on
modern music.
They will also share some
expert Chet Atkins-style guitar
picking, explaining the legacy of
this innovator of modern guitar.
This is another adult summer
reading program, free and open
to the general public, but be sure
to arrive early to get a seat!
Friends of the Library
celebrate extraordinary

On Thursday, July 23, at 2
p.m., the Friends of the Library
are inviting patrons to enjoy
some unusual finger foods in
celebration of the adult summer
reading theme: “Escape the
Ordinary.”
The library’s huge collection
of cookbooks will be highlighted
and a recipe from each of nine
cookbooks have been selected to
be prepared by FOL members.
Prizes and demonstrations
will take place during the after-
noon tasting.
This program is free and open
to the general public.

Mobley, a lifelong Flo-
rence resident and a U.S.
Army veteran, was diag-
nosed with brain cancer this
year.
A silent auction will also
be held throughout the dura-
tion of the event.
