had a large crowd.
“It was literally elbow-to-
elbow room. I wouldn’t be
surprised if there were people
at least in the high hundreds,
if not 1,000 people,” Applebee
said.
Florence Mayor Joe Henry
estimated that he and other
OCMM board members
served almost 1,000 helpings
of free burgers, hot dogs and
pulled pork during the grand
opening ceremony that lasted
until 4 p.m.
One way that Florence
helped with parking for Wings
and Wheels and the museum’s
celebration was by working
with the Rhody Express to
provide a free shuttle service
to three locations.
According to Applebee,
several hundred people used
the Rhody Express throughout
the day.
“This is the first time that
the city and Rhody Express
came up with that idea.
They’ve received grants to do
some free shuttle services, and

He did note the positives to
a cloudy evening.
“The flipside is, we had
excellent weather at the air-
port for the fly-in and car
show because we didn’t have
any wind for a change. That
made it a lot more pleasant
and do-able, especially for the
airplanes,” he said.
According to a spokesman
for the annual Wings and
Wheels show at the Florence
Municipal Airport on
Saturday, the event had record
attendance, both from specta-
tors and cars entered.
More than 100 vehicles
were on display and many
won trophies for various cate-
gories.
Mike Groshong, spokesman
for Wings and Wheels, esti-
mated that the attendance was
close to 2,000, or about 33
percent more than last year’s
estimated 1,500 visitors.

they decided that the Fourth of
July celebration would be a
good place to try that,” he
said. “It worked out great.”
The other way that Florence
helped with parking was by
securing a lease to use the
parking lot at the old Lotus
Restaurant on Bay Street.
“The extra parking was a
godsend. I understand it was
packed all the time, so that
helped the parking in Old
Town,” Applebee said.
The Old Town celebration
included pie and watermelon-
eating contests, a historic flag
display, people in period cos-
tumes and the full Boardwalk
Market before the fireworks
show in the evening.
“Old Town was packed and
it was hopping,” Applebee
said. “It was just a great week-
end. A lot of energy, a lot of
action.”
He estimates that the area’s
population doubled over the
weekend with campers, over-
night stays, people passing
through and those who come
out annually for Florence’s
celebration.
“All that was going on in
Old Town at the same time we
were having record crowds
out at the airport and at the
museum. Florence was just
jam-packed on the Fourth of
July,” Applebee said.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
BONNIE MACDUFFEE
Bonnie
MacDuff ee
has
selfl essly
contributed over 15,000 hours of volunteer
service over the past 14 years. Since 2001,
Bonnie has been an integral part of Food
Share’s success. She has helped out in a
myriad of ways, including:
1. Management and coordination of all
fund raisers
2. As a volunteer board member, she
analyzes and reports on the fi nancial
strengths and challenges this pantry faces.
3. Bonnie assists our clients from the
pantry every Wednesday aft ernoon from
4-6p.m.
4. Bonnie has and continues to volunteer in
other various capacities around town, so it is
almost unreal that she is able to fi t in so many
hours with Food Share’s responsibilities.
We won’t tell you her age, but Bonnie has the
energy of a 20 year old and the “chutzpah” of a trained
salesman when it comes to recruiting sponsorships
for our fund raisers. Florence Food Share would not
be as successful as it is without the years of support
and hard work from Bonnie MacDuff ee.

The Grand Opening was
enjoyed by nearly 800 people,
who viewed the new life-
sized dioramas, the display
cases, the temporary displays
of firearms and sailor canvas
hammocks.
The gift shop did huge
business, which brought in
more money for the muse-
um’s many ongoing projects.
The overall mood was one
of amazement and apprecia-
tion for this huge effort on the
behalf of military veterans.
