SVFR seeks grant writer Ladies of Elks award scholarships
Siuslaw Valley Fire and
Rescue (SVFR) is looking for
a volunteer grant writer who
can locate, secure and admin-
ister grants for the Florence
area’s fire department.
This position will be part of
the Fire Corps volunteer pro-
gram that offers non fire-
fighting volunteer positions to
interested community mem-
bers.
Applications are available at
the front desk of the main fire
station, 2625 Highway 101,
and online at www.svfr.org.
The application period ends
July 31.

Lodge No. 1858, recently
announced the winners of its
2015 scholarship awards.
Fourteen graduating seniors
from three local area high
schools of Florence, Mapleton
and Reedsport submitted appli-
cations for judging on the basis
of scholastic achievement,
leadership, motivation, extra-
curricular service to their com-
munities (school and local) and
financial need.
Two former scholarship
winners also applied for con-
tinuing education awards.
Scholarships of $2,000 each
were awarded to Jonathan
Griffes of Siuslaw High School
and Tucker Ford of Mapleton
High School.
Zachary Burkhart of Siuslaw
High School was awarded a
$1,000 scholarship.

shindig July 13

Local
Summer Shindig” at 5 p.m. is
hosted by Real Food Co-op
and Homegrown Public House.
It celebrates local farms within
60 miles of Florence.
It starts with light appetizers
and a family-style dinner will
be served at 5:30 p.m.
The Summer Shindig menu
will include grilled local lamb,
salmon and vegetables with
wild rice and chanterelle pilaf.
For dessert, there will fresh
seasonal berries.
A dessert auction fundraiser
will support the school garden.
Tickets are $25 and are
