POWER OF FLORENCE Siuslaw student Kaylee Graham continues Power of Florence day of service B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News S aturday, July 18, will be the fifth annual Power of Florence, a citywide day of volunteering that begins with a Power Walk, includes service projects throughout the day and ends with a party. This year, 19 groups have already signed up with park clean-ups, school service projects, drives for school supplies, barbecues, car washes, pet adoption specials and a pie and ice cream social, but there is still an opportunity for more volunteers and events to join. Power of Florence is organized by Siuslaw High School sophomore Kaylee Graham, 15, who continues a volunteering tradition that she and her brother Taylor learned from their parents, Shannon and Tod Graham. When she was 11, Kaylee decided to organ- ize volunteers, nonprofits, organizations and businesses in a day of service to the local community. “I wanted to start Power of Florence because I did another event that made me really want to volunteer and help out,” she said. “Our parents taught us to volunteer growing up.” Kaylee started volunteering when she donated toys to Siuslaw Outreach Services See C O O L P L A C ES Sand Ranch Rock Shop TO VISIT THIS SUMMER 5351 Highway 101, Florence ❘ 541-991-3110 A T A GLANCE : Sand Ranch owners Deacon and Hilary Matthews are proud to announce the opening of their new family-friendly business at the Sand Ranch north of Florence.
