Anglers will start finding more fish up in the shallows this time of year. SIUSLAW RIVER: Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout sea- son is now open for the season. The main stem of the Siuslaw and Lake Creek can be good fishing as well as the larger tribu- taries entering these sys- tems. Bait is not allowed above the head of tide but small spinners, spoons and fly fishing can be very pro- ductive. ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout sea- son is now open for the season and anglers should have fair to good results in most of the larger tributar- ies and mainstem. Small spinners are typically pro- ductive as wells as small spoons or fly fishing with nymphs or streamers. SALMON RIVER: Cutthroat trout Cutthroat trout are now open to harvest. Typically good fishing can be had during the early part of the season. Using small lures like spinners, spoons or various flies can be pro- ductive. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead Summer steelhead fish- ing is slowly starting to pick up. New fish will con- tinually be moving into the river over the next few months with the peak num- bers typically in July. River flows are much lower than normal for this time of year so think small and subtle presentations. Typical steelhead tactics apply such as bobber and jig / bait, or casting spoons or spinners. Cutthroat trout are now also open to har- vest and can be found throughout the main stem river and many large tribu- taries. WILSON RIVER: steel- head, Chinook, cutthroat Spring Chinook fishing is slow in the low clear water. A few more fish are showing in the river. Summer steelhead angling is slow also. Angling for cutthroat trout should be fair. Use lighter gear for best results. YAQUINA RIVER: cut- throat trout The cutthroat trout sea- son is open and anglers can expect to have fair to good fishing. The mainstem Yaquina and Big Elk Creek are good places to try cast- ing small spinners or spoons as well as bait fish- ing near the head of tide. UMPQUA RIVER, SOUTH: Steelhead The mainstem South Umpqua upstream to Jackson Creek Bridge is open to fishing, with trout fishing being strictly catch and release. Catch and release trout fishing in South Umpqua tributaries below Jackson Creek Bridge is also open, with fishing restricted to the use of artificial flies and lures. Smallmouth bass fishing should be productive with warming water tempera- tures. According to PGA Professional Bob Rannow, the league was designed for those who are new to golf, or haven’t played in a while, to have fun while learning or relearn- ing the fundamentals in a no-pressure atmos- phere with a great group of ladies. The group plays in a scramble format in teams of four and prizes are awarded to the team with the lowest gross and the lowest net. The fee for the summer is $85. For more information, call Rannow at 541-997-3232. Sheriffs warn against boating, drinking According to the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol is a major fac- tor in 50 percent of recreation- al boating fatalities nation- wide. Passengers are just as likely to be injured or killed because the majority of inci- dents occur from falling over- board. Operator inattention is also a primary contributing factor in crashes and other boating inci- dents. Boat operators are consid- ered to be Boating Under the Influence of Intoxicants (BUII) if they are impaired by drugs or have a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more. The law also applies to oper- ators of motorized boats and non-motorized crafts such as rafts, kayaks and canoes. Penalties can include: • Fines of up to $6,250.00 • Up to one year in jail • Loss of boating privileges for one year • Boat registration suspen- sion for up to three years • Mandatory completion of a boating safety education class Fact: Alcohol impairs your balance, coordination, vision, judgment and reaction time. Fact: The motion of the boat, the glare of the sun, the noise of the motor and the wind compound the effects of alcohol. Fact: Alcohol is absorbed directly into the blood stream. Its effects are usually apparent within minutes. Drinking alcohol faster than the body can burn it off will increase blood alcohol levels. Fact: It is okay for passen- gers to drink, however drink- ing passengers greatly increase their risks of falling overboard and drowning. Boat owners may be held liable and sued for the injuries or deaths of their intoxicated passengers. The fact is that impairment by alcohol consumption is amplified on the water. Environmental factors, such as wind, sun, noise and motion can magnify the affects of alcohol and make it difficult for someone to assist them- selves in their own rescue in a cold water event like falling overboard. — Lincoln County Sheriffs 185 Nopal Street PO Box 2566 ~ Florence, OR 541-999-1913 best or 997-1234 Dgrigsby61@hotmail.com by Appointment only “A Holistic Approach to Counseling through Mindfulness and Meditation” Buying or Selling?
