OBITUARIES
GLOVER —Geoffrey
Glover, 61, passed away of an
acute illness
May
29,
2015,
in
Portland,
Ore.
Geoff was
a rare soul
who had a
beautiful
ability
to
Geoffrey
bring
out
the
Glover
best of the
many people he gathered in
his life.
He was a friend and a
father to many and his life
was enriched by everyone
who was dear to him.
He was preceded in death
by his mother and father, Judy
and Bob Glover; his brother,
Greg Glover; and his dear
friend, Kenneth M. Morrison.
He leaves behind three lov-
ing children: Jennifer, Joelle
and Sam Glover; and his
brother, Ric Glover.

Operation Smile.
A celebration of his life
will be held at a later date.
His ashes will be returned
to the Pacific Ocean, to
become a part of his beloved
Oregon Coast forever.
DONALDSON—Charles
(Don) Gilbert (Flanigan)
Donaldson,
87, of Flor-
ence, passed
away June
6,
2015,
after strug-
gling with
Alzheimer’s
for 10 years.
He was
Charles
born
in
Donaldson
Rosedale,
Kan., on Aug, 15, 1927.
He enlisted in the U.S.
Coast Guard in 1943 because
he was not old enough to
enlist in the Navy. He then
enlisted in the U.S. Navy in
1946 and was discharged in
1950 as an operating room
technician.
In the 1950s, he started San
Jose Medical Supply, which
he sold in the late 1960s
before moving to Anderson
Calif., then Redding, Calif.,
where he worked as the pur-
chasing agent for Mercy
Medical Center until 1973.
He then sold real estate,
becoming a broker in 1985
before eventually retiring and
moving to Florence in 1994.
He loved to play golf and
enjoyed ballroom dancing.
He is survived by his wife,
Barbara; his son, Mike; his
daughter, Kathi; his youngest
son,
Christopher;
his
youngest daughter, Kathy; 12
grandchildren and 14 great-
grandchildren.
MARTENSEN—James C.
Martensen, 87, of Florence,
died June 7,
2015.
J a m e s
was
born
April 22,
1928,
to
Clara Pearl
Martensen
and Joseph
H e n r y
James
Martensen.
Martensen
He mar-
ried Hazel Elma Sisson.
He was self-employed in
the construction industry for
more than 30 years before
retiring in 2010.
He was a resident of
Florence for more than 60
years after moving to
Florence from Tillamook,
Ore.
While in Tillamook, James
was a schoolbus driver for 10
years. After moving to
Florence, he worked at the
Canary Sawmill for 10 years.
He was a train enthusiast
and enjoyed polka dancing
and was a Jehovah’s Witness.
He is survived by his chil-
dren: Carol Massey and
Merry Berg; grandchildren:
Shane Massey, Elizabeth
Mill, Gabe Berg and James
Berg.
Services will be held at
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s
Witnesses on July 4, begin-
ning at 1 p.m.

Janet was
born in Eugene on March 14,
1942, to Leroy Inman and Iris
Barker Inman and was the
eldest of four children.
She grew up in Roseburg,
graduating from Roseburg
High School in 1960.
She attended the University
of Oregon and graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in ele-
mentary school education.
During college, she met
Ron Crandall of Eugene and
in 1963 they were married.
Janet worked for five years
as a teacher until her daugh-
ters were born.
In 1975, she moved to
Florence and, some years
later, following a divorce,
married Dave Shepherd.
They made their home in
Florence for many years.
In 2010, Jan and Dave
moved to Salem to be near
her daughters after she suf-
fered a stroke. Her husband of
26 years passed away in 2013.
Jan pursued many interests
throughout her life. She was
very musical and sang in
school and community choirs.
She was an accomplished
organist and also played
piano and guitar. She loved
languages and spoke Spanish
and French. She was an avid
reader and lover of classical
music.
She was always a “do-it-
yourselfer” and loved garden-
ing and canning, quilting and
sewing, kept bees and chick-
ens,
crafted
furniture,
restored antiques and made
anything she could by hand.
As an adult, she began tak-
ing ballet for fun and exercise
and danced for several years.
Jan was employed in vari-
ous trades at different points
in her life, working as an ele-
mentary teacher, community
college instructor, seamstress,
church organist and real-
estate agent.
She also owned a sewing
shop and managed a rhodo-
dendron nursery along with
her husband.
Jan and Dave were very
involved in the Siuslaw
Chapter of the American
Rhododendron Society for
more than 35 years. Jan
served a term as chapter pres-
ident and also as Western
Regional
Conference
Chairwoman for the ARS.
They were well-known
throughout Florence due to
their active involvement in
the community.
Janet was preceded in death
by her sister, Laurel Everett;
her mother, Iris; her father,
Leroy; and her husband,
Dave.
She is survived by her
brother, Larry Inman, of
Livermore, Calif.; her sister,
Kathe Cartmell, of Tualatin;
her daughters: Elizabeth
Gaupo and Deborah Walsh,
both of Salem; her stepchil-
dren: Darryl Shepherd and
Debra Murray; and seven
grandchildren:
Holden,
Isabela, Marah, Toby, Kyan,
Ronan and Merek.
She was well-loved and
will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be
held in Salem today, June 20,
at 1 p.m., at St. Timothy’s
Episcopal Church, 3295 Ladd
Ave. NE.
A private interment will be
held at a later date at
Roseburg Memorial Gardens.

LARSEN—Earl H. Larsen,
95, of Florence, died June 17,
2015.
He was
born Aug. 7,
1919.
He was a
member of
the
Elks,
American
Legion and
Disabled
Earl Larsen
American
Veterans and was a charter
member of the Oregon Coast
Military Heritage Museum.
There will be no services.
He will be greatly missed
by his family and friends.

Local artist launches nation-
wide awareness campaign
Florence artist and owner of
The River Gallery Jan Jagoe,
has launched a nationwide
project awarding $1,000 schol-
arships to high school art stu-
dents to raise awareness of
endangered species.
The project targeted all
endangered species, with one
animal chosen to represent
each state.
Paris Meyers, from Crescent
Valley High School in Albany,
Ore., received a scholarship in
December for her watercolor
of a humpback whale.
Jordan Merz of Bonners
Ferry High School in Bonners
Ferry, Idaho, received a schol-
arship in May for her graphite
and charcoal drawing of a
woodland caribou.

mation about the project can

Promotional items are avail-

gallery, along with prints of the
winning entries.
A portion of all proceeds
will be donated to various
endangered species projects
