FRAA offers creative Quilters to show wave of creations in July
writing workshops
begin?
This workshop will provide
tips and techniques to get start-
ed in any genre, whether an
ebook or a hardcover, and
address publishing options.
Writers of all levels are wel-
come to attend. Bring paper
and pen or the writing tool of
your choice.
Registration is suggested
but not required.
Cost is $20 for FRAA mem-
bers or $25 for non-members.
The instructor offers a free
scholarship for someone in
need.
Classes will be taught by
award-winning writer, editor
and journalist Catherine J.
Rourke, who brings 30 years
of experience as a staff editor-
writer for newspapers, maga-
zines and publishers to the
workshops.
Educated in English and
journalism at the City
University of New York,
Oxford University and the
Walter Cronkite School of
Journalism, Rourke has served
as a contractual book editor
and jacket cover copywriter
for major publishing houses,
including
Amazon
and
Random House, in both print
and digital formats.
The former New Yorker has
received more than two dozen
industry awards and now
resides in Florence, where she
is penning a memoir about her
experiences as an investigative
reporter.

The Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA) presents a
new program of monthly
workshops for writers of all
levels. All classes will take
place at the FRAA center at
Munsel Lake Plaza, 4969
Highway 101, just north of
Fred Meyer.
A free introductory session
will be held at the FRAA on
Wednesday, June 24, from 1 to
2 p.m. This provides a chance
to meet the instructor, ask
questions and win a free prize
drawing.
No registration is required
for this event.
Three workshops are sched-
uled this summer:
• Saturday, June 27, from 1
to 4 p.m.: The Zen of Writing
— Ignite Your Creative Spark!
This inspiring workshop will
show how to find your writing
voice, turn on your creative
faucet and keep it flowing.
Through simple steps and easy
prompts, learn how to unleash
the literary lion and creative
genius within you.
• Saturday, July 25, from 1
to 4 p.m.: The Art of Memoir
— Share Your Story. Everyone
is unique as a storyteller and
each person’s life contains
invaluable lessons, wisdom,
courage and humor. Turn these
meaningful experiences into
powerful stories that can heal,
uplift and inspire hope in oth-
ers and leave a legacy of love
for families and friends.

to 4 p.m.: Jump Start Your
Book. Do you have a book

Guild's (RQG) own Donna
Schoeningh will be the fea-
tured quilter for the 2015 Wave
of Quilts quilt show at the
Florence Events Center, July
24 and 25. There will be door
prizes, a quilt raffle, demon-
strations, silent auction, quilt
vendors, a boutique and quilt
contest.
There will be free admission
to anyone age 12 and younger,
or 80 and older. Admission for
everyone else is $5.
Those interested in entering
a quilt in the show’s
judged contest can get an
entry
form
online
at
www.rhodyquilt.com. Entries
are due by June 24.
Raffle tickets are $1 each, or
six for $5. Proceeds go to RQG
education and programs. The
raffle drawing for the featured
quilt will be Saturday, July 25.
The show will be open from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday,
July 24, and from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. on July 25.
Since the group’s creation in
1992, it has grown from 15
members to 65 — and grow-
ing. During the year, members
make quilts for the Pregnancy
Center, along with clothing
protectors and wheelchair bags
for assisted living programs in
the Florence area.
