Cunningham art selected for port
The Public Art Steering
Committee met June 8 and
reviewed the submissions for
the outdoor artwork to be dis-
played on the Port of Siuslaw
marina. A “blind” judging was
held, and the committee was
impressed by the creativity dis-
played in each of the submis-
sions, which came from both
local and out of area artists.
The
committee
has
announced that local artist Kat
Cunningham’s submission was
chosen for this project.
It will depict a colorful, nau-
tical theme and will be com-
pleted and in place by Sept. 30,
2015.
Originally trained as a com-
mercial artist, Cunningham has
lived in the Florence area for
more than 10 years. She has
won numerous awards, con-
ducted one-woman shows, and
successfully worked in a vari-
ety of mediums including
encaustic, mixed media and

Groups forming for annual Power of Florence
The fifth annual Power of
Florence is an opportunity for
members of the community to
come together and have fun
while making a difference.
The Power of Florence is a
festival-like event, with fun
activities around town con-
tributing to make the commu-
nity better.
Anyone can take part in it.
Currently, 19 events are
being organized for July 18.
Many will be set up in the
Grocery Outlet parking lot,
such as the annual Humane
Society Barbecue, Stuff the
Van, and Kitten Adoption Day.
There will be live entertain-
ment for all to enjoy during the
after party in the parking lot
with entertainers, including
blues musician David Weigan,
CROW kids’ dance and song
group, and local musician
Marty Adams.
Many events raise funds for
local nonprofit organizations
through events such as car
washes, to raise money for
Children’s
Repertory
of
Oregon Workshops and other
nonprofit groups.
There are also service proj-
ects that beautify local parks,
schools and beaches.
This year, the City of
Florence, Mayor Joe Henry and
City Manager Erin Reynolds
will be teaming up with mem-
bers from Florence Christian
Church and the Realtors of
Florence to beautify Miller
Park.
Kiwanis,
Florence
Ambassadors and Rotary have
beautification projects planned
as well.
In four years, Power of
Florence participants have
raised $32,000, completed 48
service projects and collected
more than 10,000 pounds of
food for the Food Share and
Humane Society.
If you or your group would
like to participate, contact
Power of Florence organizer
Kaylee Graham.
Anyone who would like to
plan their own event can do

Worried about the high cost of

Author to speak on
quest for missing son
In October 2010, Sandy
Lee’s 36-year-old son disap-
peared without a trace while
visiting his hometown. Three
months later, his partial
remains were found during a
community search organized
by Lee — who then began her
own search to discover the cir-
cumstances surrounding her
son's murder.
“No Stone Unturned”
chronicles a mother’s passion-
ate pursuit to lay her son to
rest by finding him justice, as
well as begin the process of
healing through her memoirs,
which include photographs,
personal poems and insights.
On Friday, June 26, Lee will
be at Port Hole Books to dis-
cuss her experience, share
excerpts and sign copies of her
book.
Though Lee isn’t a Port
Hole Publications author,
bookstore owner, publisher
and bestselling author Ellen
Traylor felt Lee’s message was
one that needed to be shared.
“It’s every parent’s worst
nightmare when a child goes
missing, even if he or she is an
adult,” said Traylor. “This
brave mother’s story is inspir-
ing and deserves a wide audi-
ence. We can all gain some-
thing from the message of
strength and hope she brings.”
The event is free and will
begin at 7 p.m. at Port Hole

As you can tell I’m not
camera shy at all, I look
best in natural sunlight. I
am, however, in search of
a owner with a light touch
and that person would
have to be sensitive and
patient with my needs. I’m
still working on letting
down my wall and letting
someone love me. It would be more comfortable for me to allow this to
happen if I were the only pet. Serious inquiries only...ask for Hutch.
