MID COAST LAKES
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can be productive during
the spring as lake tempera-
tures start to rise and fish
begin spawning. Anglers
will start finding more fish
up in the shallows this time
of year.
SIUSLAW RIVER: cut-
throat trout
The cutthroat trout sea-
son is now open for the
season. The main stem of
the Siuslaw and Lake
Creek can be good fishing
as well as the larger tribu-
taries entering these sys-
tems. Bait is not allowed
above the head of tide but
small spinners, spoons and
fly fishing can be very pro-
ductive.
ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat
trout
The cutthroat trout sea-
son is now open for the
season and anglers should
have fair to good results in
most of the larger tributar-
ies and mainstem. Small
spinners are typically pro-
ductive as well as small
spoons or fly fishing with
nymphs or streamers.

Summer steelhead fish-

I
t was a bittersweet season for 18-
year-old Siuslaw senior MaryAnn
Holdren, who finished her fourth
year riding as an equestrian in OHSET
(Oregon High School Equestrin Team)
competition — this year as Siuslaw’s
lone rider. Holdren rode for Siuslaw
her freshman and sophomore years,
then for Mapleton her junior year
before returning to Siuslaw for her
final year of high school competition.
Holdren faced plenty of hurdles,
and not just on the riding course.
Initially, there was no coach for
Siuslaw until Charleston Fire Chief
Mick Sneddon, himself a 1982 gradu-

Holdren in addition to the team he
coaches for Marshfield.

The Three Rivers Sandblasters
opened the season at home Monday,
kicking off a 25-game schedule that
includes eight home stands between
now and July 19.
In Monday’s opener, the ’Blasters
struggled in the field with five errors
that played to the advantage of the vis-
iting Dodgers of Withnell.
At the plate, Florence managed just
three hits with efforts from Zach
Inskeep, Jonathon Bennison and Tyler
Campbell manufacturing the team’s
only run.
For the Dodgers, relief pitcher Wade
Doane of Reedsport threw a trio of hit-
less innings to keep the Sandblasters

was important as an alumnus of
Siuslaw to return the team to the blue
and gold,” said Sneddon. “MaryAnn
worked hard on her equestrian skills
this year and consistently improved
her scores in every event each meet
this season.
“As a coach, it was rewarding to
see MaryAnn’s hard work pay off like
that her senior year.”
In pole bending,, for example,
Holdren shaved nearly four seconds
off her time, and improved by two
seconds in the keyhole event.
