Anglers will start finding more fish up in the shallows this time of year. SIUSLAW RIVER: cut- throat trout The cutthroat trout sea- son is now open for the season. The main stem of the Siuslaw and Lake Creek can be good fishing as well as the larger tribu- taries entering these sys- tems. Bait is not allowed above the head of tide but small spinners, spoons and fly fishing can be very pro- ductive. ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat trout The cutthroat trout sea- son is now open for the season and anglers should have fair to good results in most of the larger tributar- ies and mainstem. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News I t was a bittersweet season for 18- year-old Siuslaw senior MaryAnn Holdren, who finished her fourth year riding as an equestrian in OHSET (Oregon High School Equestrin Team) competition — this year as Siuslaw’s lone rider. Holdren rode for Siuslaw her freshman and sophomore years, then for Mapleton her junior year before returning to Siuslaw for her final year of high school competition. Holdren faced plenty of hurdles, and not just on the riding course. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News The Three Rivers Sandblasters opened the season at home Monday, kicking off a 25-game schedule that includes eight home stands between now and July 19. In Monday’s opener, the ’Blasters struggled in the field with five errors that played to the advantage of the vis- iting Dodgers of Withnell. At the plate, Florence managed just three hits with efforts from Zach Inskeep, Jonathon Bennison and Tyler Campbell manufacturing the team’s only run.
