Veteran from 1A According to Graham, Olienyk and his daughter Lori Olienyk did most of the plan- ning this year. Olienyk was instrumental in starting and completing the memorial. Other veterans who partici- pated in the field trip included Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) members Harley Youngblood, Tony Carvano, Al Pearn and Bob Severy. According to Olienyk, five classes attended the tour held earlier this month. “Students were given a tour of Veteran’s Memorial Park, Old Town and Florence City Hall,” he said. Florence City Manager Erin Reynolds and Megan Messmer, public information officer, guided the tour at the city. Gerald Fleming’s second- grade class attended the tour with Olienyk and Youngblood on Thursday. The visit included Youngblood’s description of World War II history and a story about the origins of “Godzilla.” Then, Mike Jones, parent to one of Fleming’s students, told of his adventures in the U.S. Navy after Desert Storm. “We want to thank you guys for your service in the mili- tary. We’d like to offer you a hand,” Fleming said to the vet- erans, and his students stepped Siltcoos from 1A “It has four cabins, a care- taker cottage and workshop, plus the boathouse. It is an unconventional property, ideal for a family retreat,” said Andy Johnson of Coldwell Banker. up to shake hands. “I’m looking at those names while we’re talking,” Fleming continued. “I grew up here, and I see so many people up there whose names I recog- nize. ... We’re going to give you an opportunity to look at these bricks and find some- body that really connects with you.” Students searched the names on the memorial wall, looking for names they con- nected with: names they knew, like parents, cousins or neigh- bors, and names they didn’t know, but liked the way they sounded. Once each student picked a name, they made crayon etch- ings of the brick. As the tracing revealed the name underneath, the students kept up a commentary of “Oh, I see it!” “This is awesome!” and “Can I do another one?” Fleming brought them back together. “Your opportunity right now is to write a friendly letter to a veteran. … What might it sound like?” he asked. Some students said, “I love you, daddy,” “Thank you for being my hero,” “Thank you for serving my country,” “Thank you for doing a lot for Florence,” and “Thank you for keeping us safe.” Each student wrote at least one letter and sealed it in an envelope. They then placed the letters at the foot of the wall. “We’re going to deliver the “I don’t know what the future of the property will be,” said Pierson, “but I hope it continues to benefit our com- munity and the community around Siltcoos for years to come. “It will definitely benefit our students.” stack of notes and messages to veterans at the VFW meet- ings,” said Olienyk. “It’s going, thanks to the students. It’s a way we can carry their thanks out.” One student asked if she could thank President George Washington. “Can you still thank some- one who is not alive? Absolutely,” Fleming said. If the students wrote to a deceased veteran, the veteran’s family would receive the let- ter. “I think the very fact that the school took time to put this together is wonderful,” Olienyk said. “This is a community where you like to be involved. People love each other here,” said Youngblood. “It’s been pretty cool and powerful for the kids,” Fleming said. “These guys are ‘living legend’ kinds of guys, so it’s pretty neat to have them here with us.” The tour provides learning experience and allows students the chance to interact with people they might not know. “It’s a good way to close the year together. It’s a good day to see the history and a chance to celebrate the vets,” he said. For Siuslaw second-graders, this ending represents a whole new beginning. *Valid for new patients only.
