OBITUARIES
HOOD—Leo Dale Hood,
78, of Westlake, passed away
June 3, 2015, in Florence.
He
was
born Jan. 14,
1937,
in
Rocky Ford,
Colo.
His family
moved
to
Modesto,
Calif., then
to Gridley,
Leo Hood
Calif., where
Dale graduated from Gridley
High School.
He attended Yuba College
and LaVerne College. He
played in a band on the local
radio station and was active in
the Future Farmers of America
and youth group at Life Oak
Church of the Brethren.
Dale worked many years in
construction, building many of
the Southern California free-
way systems as a truck driver.
He then went on to work at
the University of Irvine school
of medicine in the research and
development labs, where he
was involved with knee
replacement, incubators for
premature babies and the heart
probe.
He moved back to Northern
California where he went to
work for Berlin Manufacturing
in Woodland, Calif., from 1976
to 1977, specializing in con-
verting tomato harvesters into
electric ones.
From there, he went on to
the University of California –
Davis at Crocker nuclear lab
shop from 1977 to 1984, and
also was a machine shop super-
visor in the physical plant from
1987-94 before eventually
retiring.
After retirement he went to
work for Hillaby’s Internation-
al in Woodland, Calif., as a
shop foreman. Then in 1996,
he moved to Westlake for his
final retirement.
Dale was very active in the
First Baptist Church and
helped construct the new
church.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
boating and camping.
He was also a volunteer for
the Red Cross.
He is survived by his wife,
Nancy, of Florence; and his
daughters: Cindy Hood and
Caryn Hood, of Yuba City,
Calif., and Cherie Hood of
Knights Landing, Calif.; his
only grandchild, Samantha
Hood Odell of Knights
Landing, Calif.; his brother,
Darrell, and his wife, Jan
Hood, of Albany, Ore.; and
brother-in-law, Brian Carroll.
A service will be held June
13, at 2 p.m., at the First
Baptist Church, 1935 25th St.
in Florence.
Dale’s final resting place
will be Gridley Biggs
Cemetery in Gridley, Calif., on
June 27, at 2 p.m.
Burns’s Riverside Chapel

charge of all arrangements.
WALLACE—Mary Ellen
Wallace, 99, formerly of
Florence, passed away June 1,

Wheatland Village in Walla
Walla, Wash.
She was born Feb. 17, 1916,
to William Joseph Broderick
and Laura Belle Smith in
Aberdeen, Wash.
In 1938, she married Jack
Hadden Wallace in Ellensburg,
Wash., where she was raised.
After their marriage, the couple
lived in Baker, Ore., until 1947,
when she and her husband
drove the Alcan Highway to
Alaska and began home-
steading near Copper Center.
They also owned Alaska
Freight Lines in Valdez,
Alaska.
After Jack passed away in
1985, Mary moved to Florence,
where she lived until 2011. In
the fall of 2011, she moved to
Walla
Walla
and
into
Wheatland Village.
Mary had no children and is
survived by her niece, Jerry
(Thomas) Mosgrove; her
grandnieces: Michelle Liberty
and Mary (Farrell) Traughber,
as well as her grand nephew,
David (Janna) Liberty, and
their children and grandchil-
dren.
At her request, there will be
no funeral service. Memorial
contributions may be made to
the Humane Society of your
choice.
