The Siuslaw High School
Interact club recently donated
$200
to
Stove
Team
International.
Stove Team International,
started in 2008, has sponsored
factories that have produced
and distributed more than
50,000 fuel-efficient cook-
stoves in Mexico and Central
America. Interact’s donation
will provide cook-stoves for
four families.
These stoves reduce burns,
respiratory, eye and skin prob-
lems that plagued families for
hundreds of years. It reduces
wood use by over 50 percent
and harmful emissions by 70
percent.
They are low-cost and built
from all locally sourced materi-
als. They are portable, require
no installation or external
chimney and adapt easily to
local Latin America cooking
customs.
The SHS Interact Club held
several fundraising events in
order to donate to this interna-
tional service project.
Interact is sponsored by the
Rotary Club of Florence and
open to all students in ninth
through 12th grades. This year
had 30 members helping with
several community service
projects
including:
the
Soroptimist Christmas Basket
project, Read Across America
with elementary school stu-
dents, the middle school men-
torship program, help with
Rotary Auction and hosting the
annual Community Easter Egg
Hunt held at Miller Park.
The club takes a summer
break and will resume again in
September. For more informa-
tion, contact Rotary Interact
advisors Lis Farm at lis
