OBITUARIES
CAMP—Gordon
Albert
Camp, of Mapleton, passed
away as the result of cancer
May
13,
2015, at his
daughter's
home
in
Aloha, Ore.,
with his two
children by
his side.
Gordon
Gordon Camp was born to
Walter and
Anne Camp in Melbourne,
Australia, on Nov. 14, 1945.
When he was nine months
old, his family moved to
Mapleton, where he grew up
with his two younger sisters,
Susan and Jeannie.
In 1964, he graduated from
Mapleton High School and
proceeded to OTI in Klamath
Falls, Ore., to study electrical
engineering — which he quick-
ly found to be boring. So, he
decided to get his pilot’s
license instead; no matter what
the weather was like on the
ground, it was always sunny
above the clouds.
He joined the Army in 1967
and, after serving in Vietnam,
returned home in January 1969.
Using the GI Bill, he obtained
his commercial pilot’s license
and later moved to Friday
Harbor, Wash., where he flew
for San Juan Airlines and met
Marilyn Moss whom he mar-
ried in 1980. They had two
children, Alison and Brandon,
and built a log home together
before moving to Florence in
1987 to work for the city run-
ning the airport, Florence
Aviation.
Gordon gave flight instruc-
tion lessons and scenic tours, as
well as taking aerial photo-
graphs of the coast and devel-
oping the film himself. In the
summer, he and his kids would
spot fires for the Forest
Service.
In 1990, Gordon took a job
with Ameriflight and the fami-
ly moved to Gresham, Ore.,
until he and his wife parted
ways and he returned to
Mapleton in 2006, officially
retiring from flying.
From then on his goal, as
well as his kids’, was to restore
his family’s homestead house
on Knowles Creek and begin
organic farming. The house
and the farm are still a work-in-
progress because there were so
many motorcycle adventures to
be had, boats to build and sail-
ing to be done. He also took up
the disciplined art of Shuri-te
Karate and earned his black
belt.
In 2012, he re-married for a
short time and moved to the
Methow Valley in Northern
Wash., but returned to his
hometown once again a year
later. His friends and family
were so thrilled to have him
back, having felt like Mapleton
just wasn’t the same without
him.
On May 14 of last year, he
welcomed his first grandchild,
Alder Ray Huss, with whom he
shared and taught as much as
one can in only a year.
Gordon leaves behind his
sisters, Susan McAllister of
Mapleton and Jeannie Wallace
of Springfield; and his chil-
dren, Alison Huss of Portland
and Brandon Camp of
Gresham; and his faithful farm
dog, Bella.
Gordon cherished his family,
friends and the beauty of nature
and believed in the richness of
a full life. He is truly loved and
missed by all who knew him.
A memorial will take place
June 27, at 3 p.m., at Knowles
Creek Farm, 12117 Highway
126 in Mapleton.

Sherry lived most of her
adult life in Florence. During
her work career, she was a
bookkeeper, then a special edu-
cation assistant for the Siuslaw
School District, where she
retired.
She enjoyed living in the
Florence community and was
involved in coordinating
Special Olympics for many
years. A long-time member of
the Florence Church of the
Nazarene, Sherry enjoyed
spending time organizing the
annual Christmas party. Sherry
was a loving mother and grand-
mother who enjoyed attending
the activities and sporting

grandchildren. She was a kind-
hearted mother, grandmother
and friend who always put oth-
ers’ needs above her own.
Sherry and Gary celebrated
their 52nd wedding anniver-
sary with family in Boise on
Monday, May 25, shortly
before her passing.
