PFLAG to discuss
challenges of aging

PFLAG-Florence
Tuesday, June 9, for a discus-
sion of the challenges faced
by older LGBT adults as they
age.
As more and more mem-
bers of the LGBT community
reach retirement, it will be
essential to understand the
hardships associated with
aging as a LGBT person, as
well as increase public
awareness of these issues in
order to build a supportive
community.
Members of Portland’s
Gay and Grey program will
present information on the
barriers seniors face as they
age, but also discuss the
training resources provided
through Friendly House, an
affiliate of SAGE, the nation-
al organization of Services

and Advocacy for Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans-
gender Elders.
The meeting on June 9 at
6:30 p.m., will be in the
Fellowship Hall of Florence
United Methodist Church,
333 Kingwood Ave.
The program is free and
open to the public.
Discussion will follow and
refreshments will be served.

chapters and 200,000 mem-
bers and supporters across
the United States. PFLAG is

zation for parents, families,
friends, and straight allies
united with people who are
lesbian, gay, bisexual and

To eat or not to eat? That was the
question for Siuslaw High School and
Middle School with the production
of two one-act zombie plays. The
students performed scenes and mono-
logues as zombies, survivors, narrators
and everyday people. Both shows were
directed by drama instructor and lan-
guage arts teacher Eddie Mielke.

Hillsberry,

nationally
acclaimed watercolorist, at its
“Friday Friday ... Art is for
Everyone” event. The Lower
Umpqua Hospital is hosting
this event from 5 to 7 p.m.

shapes to evoke a sense of
playfulness and joy in the
viewer,” she says. Her works
include
landscapes
and
seascapes, flowers, boats and
animals.
Hillsbery considers herself a
story teller and invites the
viewer to “look for the under-
lying idea she is sharing” in her
paintings.
She found her chosen art
medium after taking a work-
shop from Katheryn Davis,
now conducting workshops for
all levels.
Hillsberry said she finds that
most students “want to learn
how to paint more freely, so I
give them many exciting tech-
niques to inspire them.”
Hillsbery is a prolific painter
and has been entering competi-
tions since 2003. Her paintings
are exhibited at Earthworks
Gallery in Yachats and the
Mindpower
Gallery
in
Reedsport, and she has been a
featured artist at the Backstreet
Gallery in Florence.
