Debate team something to talk about this season
The Siuslaw Forensics Team
made waves in Monmouth this
month when member Hanna
Anderson competed in the
OSAA Speech and Debate
State Tournament.
Coach Lance Haberly indi-
cated he was “very pleased that
Hanna won our district com-
pletion
in
the
Radio
Commentary event. As a first-
year
competitor,
Hanna
showed quite a bit of versatility
and ability in several events.
“She was very close to mak-
ing the semi-finals at the state
tournament.”
Anderson only needed two
more points to advance.
Anderson and fellow team
members Katherine Dodson,
Laura Johnson, Taryn Larson
and Korina Shipstad participat-
ed in various forensics tourna-
ments around the state.
They competed in events
such as public forum debate,
prose reading and radio com-
mentary.
Forensics is a combination
of individual speaking events
and three different debate for-
mats.

out the year and have a chance

iuslaw High School students in Erin Ellis’ World
Studies class would like to thank Western Lane
Community Foundation for awarding them a
grant to purchase a new set of Student Atlases of the
World. The previous set of atlases were several years
old and had outdated information about global popu-
lation patterns and political borders. The new class
set has provided students an opportunity to now ana-
lyze current, significant issues of the world’s cultural
and physical geography and hone their critical think-
ing skills required to meet the state’s geography stan-
dards for high school. Above, Megan Miller works on
a location activity with the new atlas.
