SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2015 OBITUARIES S C H WA RT Z — D o r o t h y “Dottie” Margaret Schwartz, 89, of Flo- rence, joined her Heavenly Father on May 9, 2015. Born to Carl Vincent Abbott and Lillian Shan- del (Polsky) Dorothy Abbott on Schwartz Sept. 5, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, Dottie spent her childhood on their family farm in Sharon Center, Ohio. During her career in California, Dottie dedicated many years to New York Life as an administrative assistant. She later retired from Pepperdine University where she was an event coordinator. Her personal joys came from sewing clothing and Halloween costumes for her children, entertaining family and friends, stamp collecting, oil painting, working in her garden and playing card games. There were endless hours of Pinochle, with some Skip-Bo thrown in for good measure. She was a dedicated mother who always found the time to attend her childrens’ school functions or any other activities they were involved in. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, where she actively participated and volunteered in various areas of the church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 50 years, Meryl E. Hjorth, who passed away in December 1999; and her later- in-life husband, Ted C. Schwartz, who passed away in October 2013. She is survived by her sister, Betty Jane Coleman of North Beach, Md.; her three children: Paula Book of Florence, Cheri Jordan (Jim), also of Florence, and David Hjorth (Mary Ellen) of Upland, Calif.; five grand- children, 11 great-grandchil- dren and one great-great- grandchild. Dottie’s family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Khurram Naqvi, Florence Hospice and Spruce Point staff for the caring, attentive and compassionate attention given to their mother during her brief illness. In many instances they went well beyond the norm to be extra supportive to family members. A celebration of life will be held at Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home on June 4, at 1 p.m., followed by a reception at Tavolo Restaurant at Sandpines Golf Links. Gravesite interment will be private. Donations in her name can be made to Peace Harbor Home Health and Hospice, 400 Ninth St. in Florence. Friends of Library seeking volunteers Those living in or near Florence have a popular public library that meets the many needs of its diverse population. The Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library (FOL) is seek- ing help in meeting its goal of supporting the Siuslaw Public Library. To achieve those goals, vol- unteers are needed in the fol- lowing areas: • Join the Friends of the Library. There is a great need for volunteers to work on the Friends’ many projects, such as book sorting, book sales activi- ties, greeting card creation, membership recruiting and data management, newsletter creation, publicity generation, website maintenance and other special projects, such as last year’s Literary Basket project. Public meeting today on Hwy 101 pedestrian safety Providing safe pedestrian crossing of Highway 101 in Honeyman State Park will be among the topics discussed at a public meeting May 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library. Highway 101 bisects the park, with trails on both sides of the highway and a pedes- trian overpass connecting them. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department recently reviewed the status of an unofficial trail that hikers and runners use to cross the highway at grade. Officials are expanding their review to cover the entire trail system and how best to connect the two sides of the park, taking into consideration the pedestrian overpass that opened in 2005. The meeting will be an opportunity for trail users to share ideas on safely cross- ing the highway, best routes, trailheads, destinations and recreation needs. Comments will be used to update and refine the prelim- inary concepts laid out for the trail system in the 2009 master plan. For more information, go to honeymanstatepark.com. Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra S g Concer n i r p t “A Spring Potpourri”, under the baton of John Monks. The program is a delightful mix of pieces arranged for small orchestra. A partial list of the programs includes the tongue-in-cheek “March Funabre del Signor Contrapunto” by Mozart, the grand “Procession of the Sardar by Ippolitov-Ivanov, the folk and ethnic inspired “Spanish Dance” by Moskowski, “Overture to The Mikado” by Sullivan, and “Eire Inspiration and Jigs” by Sung. The soothing “Bercuese” by Faure and bossa nova “O Amor Em Paz” are spiced up with “Laurel” and “I Remember New Orleans” by Charlie Perkins. May 31, Sunday 2 p.m. Florence Community Baptist Church 4590 HWY 101 Tickets are $10 at the door. Funds generated by the Friends’ many projects are used to support the library. Both fiction and non- fiction books are always in demand and may be brought to the library on Ninth Street.
