Everyone has heard and
most likely seen Civil War
reenactors. Yet each year in
rural Western Oregon, a grow-
ing group of young men — and
several veterans — reenact a
more contemporary war:
Vietnam.
“In Country,” playing May
19 (with an encore on May 24),
from award-winning directors
Mike Attie and Meghan
O’Hara, delves into this
strange but compelling culture
of men and war. Participants
include veterans from both
sides of the Vietnam War, vets
from Afghanistan and Iraq and
even a high school student.
“I think audiences are crav-
ing films beyond the main-
stream — this series allows us
to get these amazing films on-
screen, even if only for a day or
two,” said Michael Falter, co-
owner of City Lights Cinemas.
“In Country” is the first in
the next round of documen-
taries at the cinema.
The spin-doctors are placed
under a microscope in
“Merchants of Doubt”; Master
filmmaker Wim Wenders
returns a portrait of photogra-
pher Sebastião Salgado with
“The Salt of the Earth”; “Dior
and I” goes behind the scenes
of the fashion house; the late
Albert
Maysles
(Grey
Gardens) leaves with us a por-
trait of a fashion icon in “Iris”;
and Tony Hawk expands on the
idea of physical freedom as a
motivating factor in adventure
sports in “The Search for
Freedom.”

of an ever-changing hum-

• June 9: “Dior and I.” A
behind-the-scenes look at the
creation of Raf Simons’ first

• June 16: “Iris.” This docu-
mentary about fashion icon and
nonagenarian Iris Apfel is also
the final film from legendary

phy, both HD and archival,
punctuate this high-energy
