THE LOCAL REGION
The Vikings baseball team
moved a game ahead of
Brookings and Douglas
Friday after splitting the
evening’s doubleheader with
the Bruins on their home turf.
Siuslaw dominated the
opener for a 7-2 win, but lost
the nightcap 10-3. In spite of
the loss, the Vikings (4-8)
were able to nudge the Bruins
out of a tie for fourth place
with the win, taking sole pos-
session ahead of the Bruins
and Trojans, who are tied for
fifth in the Far West at 3-9.

recently or will be soon
again. Most areas will be
stocked multiple times
until early June. Be sure to

Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can be productive during
the spring months as lake
temperatures start to rise
and fish begin spawning.
Anglers will start finding
more fish up in the shal-
lows over the next month.

Athletes of all ages, and skill level, from Olympic to enthusiast, gathered for Dunes City’s third
annual Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday, May 9. Participants had the choice
of competing in all three events — swimming, cycling and running — or a combination, includ-
ing sprint, relay, Olympic, individual and team relay. The top winners in the sprint division for
the men was 21-year-old Marco Ramirez with a time of 1:02:45. The female winner was 46-
year-old Sara Cannon in 1:09:43. In the Olympic division, 28 year-old Stephen Campbell won
the men’s triathlon in 2:16:38. Annick Chalier, 36, won the women’s race in 2:38:21. Full results

Siuslaw’s track team continues to
build steam toward this weekend’s Far
West League district meet in Brookings,
with sophomore Carissa Oliver landing
the 4A’s best mark of the season in the
discus during Friday’s 16-team meet at
the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in
Cottage Grove.
Oliver, who set a personal best at 124-
5 to win the event, also placed fifth in the
shot put at 34-5.
The Lady Viks also got a win from
junior Mikaela Siegel in the triple jump
with a PR leap of 32-6. Siegel also
placed second in the 110-meter hurdles
(16.85), 300-meter hurdles (48.20) and
long jump (16-02.5), helping Siuslaw
nudge Sisters out of second place by one
point, 72.5 to 71.5, in team scoring.

MEET
Siuslaw’s Carissa Oliver holds the
best 4A discus throw of the season.
Newport won the team title with 106
points.
For the boys, senior Joseph Dotson set
a school record in the 300-meter hurdles,
crossing the finish in 39.33, just tenths of
a second faster than previous Siuslaw
record-holder Collin Cram (39.84).
Dotson also won the 400 meters with
a time of 50.78.
Siuslaw also got scoring from senior
runner Seth Campbell, who was second
in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.22,
and sophomore Jack Pickell in the 3,000-
meter race after finishing third with a
time of 9:41.35.
The Viking boys finished eighth over-
all and in the middle of the pack with 46
points. Henley claimed the team crown
with 94.5 points.
