Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Haunted Ground by Erin Hart Book review by Susie Voth I often peruse the Library2Go Downloadable Books when I’m at home without an audiobook. I’ve finally figured out how to search the catalog, how to limit the search to the type of book I want (audio or e-book), the type of device I use, how to find the genre I most like to read and how to download the book. I just finished “Haunted Ground” by Erin Hart, a Library2Go audiobook. Before I get into the book review, just let me say that the woman who narrates the book, Jennifer McMann, is a fantastic reader. The lilting Irish accent was like a caress to my ears. “Haunted Ground” is really two mysteries in one book. The mystery of the caili’n rua (pro- nounced col-leen rua), the bog- preserved head of a woman with long red hair, brings Irish archae- ologist Cormac Maguire and American pathologist Nora Gavin together. Both are intrigued by the fact that there is no body attached to the head and both wonder what might be the story behind that. A complication to answering their questions is that bog bodies (or heads as the case may be) do not decay because of the acidic watery environment of the bog — so the head could have been buried for two years or two cen- turies. The second mystery involves a missing mother, Mina Osborne and her young son. Hugh Osborne has been suspected of murdering his wife and child since they went missing over two years ago. When the news of the found body part reaches Hugh, he races to the site to discover if it is the head of his missing wife. This is the first book in a series featuring Nora Gavin and Cormac Maguire by Erin Hart. All of the books in the series are available either at the library or from Library2Go. Celebrate the library’s centennial tomorrow! Do not forget: tomorrow, Thursday, May 7, starting at 6 p.m., the library will be hosting a “Chamber After Hours” in celebration of its 100th birthday. The library began May 7, 1915, when the Women’s Conservation League opened the door’s of Florence’s first library in the Commercial Club, a fore- runner of the Chamber of Commerce. 5 A Several months later the library received it’s first book donations from the state library, and the library was off and run- ning — and growing and serving the community ever since. So, join the community May 7. There will be food and drinks, live music, door prizes, the opportunity to have your photo taken in front of a giant library card, visiting with friends and library users, and more. Everyone, young and old, is invited to this birthday celebra- tion. Answerland Did you know that you can ask a question of a reference librarian 24-hours a day, seven days a week?
