SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 2015 Bay Casino to open doors tomorrow in Coos Bay Three Rivers Casino Resort has announced the grand open- ing of its new casino will be Thursday, May 7. The casino is located at 1297 Ocean Blvd. NW in Coos Bay. The tribal event will begin at noon and will feature tribal members of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw tribes, along with local business lead- ers, Three Rivers Players Club Members and numerous other guests. The event will run until approximately 1 p.m., when the Bay Casino will open to the public. The casino will fea- ture more than 250 new games and a full service onsite restau- rant, Café 1297. Former tribal council chair- man Bob Garcia will oversee all operations of the facility and provide all coordination between it and the existing Three Rivers Casino Resort in Florence. Garcia will also handle all community relations and out- reach in the Coos Bay area. Three Rivers projects the new Coos Bay casino will pro- vide more than 90 job posi- tions relating to the operation of the facility. Four onsite property shift managers will oversee all daily operations of the casino, in addition to being involved in all aspects of the recruitment, selection and training process for the 90-plus employees. The addition of this facility falls in the footsteps of the Three Rivers’ evolution of its Florence facility into a full resort property. According to Garcia, “Our investment in this facility reflects the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians’ long-term commitment to the local southern Oregon coast community. “We believe in this commu- nity and we want to build and maintain a positive partnership with everyone here.” For more information visit www.threeriverscasino.com. Local artists exhibit in Expressions West 2015 Paintings by Florence artists Susan Canavarro and Win Jolley will be in the Expressions West exhibit in Coos Bay through June 27. The exhibit includes Canavarro’s work “Up-Ended” (above left) and Jolley’s “Orbetello Dalmatian.” COOS BAY — Two local Florence artists, Win Jolley and Susan Canavarro, have had their work juried into the Expressions West 2015 paint- ing competition at the Coos Art Museum. Jolley’s watercolor “Orbetello Dalmatian” and Canavarro’s acrylic painting “Up-Ended” were two of 61 paintings selected. The Expressions West 2015 painting exhibit runs through June 27. Artists from 13 western states were invited to compete in this biennial event. Juror Brian Hoover selected 61 paintings by 44 artists residing in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon and Washington. FRAA youth art workshops Kassy Keppol will be teach- ing Dragon Arts classes for kids of all ages at the Florence Regionals Arts Alliance (FRAA) Art Center starting in May. Keppol is a Language Arts teacher for grades k-12 in the Siuslaw School District, and is also a Talented and G i f t e d teacher for after school programs: art, weav- ing, math and writing clubs. Dragon Arts classes are for all ages, and Keppol will have teen helpers who will work with the younger children so the older ones can do more advanced projects. Scheduled classes/work- shops are: • Dollhouse Club: Satur- days, May 9, 23 and 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. There is a one- time fee of $50 to make the dollhouse, or $15 per session for those with dollhouses. Participants will be making many kinds of miniature furni- ture and accessories for the dollhouse. • Doll-making Club: Satur- days, May 9, 23 and 30, from noon to 2 p.m. Participants will be making all kinds of dolls. Cost is $15 per session. • Fairy Camp: Tuesday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will be making fairy wings, a fairy house, a fairy garden, and all things glittery and magical.
