SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MAY 2, 2015 3 B Coastal Gems’ set Run with Flippers, Feathers next jaunt for May 5 and Fins at aquarium 5K Come walk with The Coastal Gems on Tuesday, May 5, in Lincoln City. The group will meet at 8:55 a.m., at the Yachats Commons to car- pool to Lincoln City, or meet at the Cozy Cove Resort, 515 NW Inlet Ave., in Lincoln City at 10:30 a.m. Cars will have to be moved from the Cozy Cove a short distance to the start point. The group walks in any weather, so come prepared. This 10K walk is rated 2B for a couple of short steep hills and some uneven footing. The trail is difficult for wheelchairs or strollers. For those who want a short- er walk, there is a 5K option also rated 2B. As always, leashed pets are welcome on walks, but carry water and cleanup materials for your pet. Walks often pass through areas that require a 6- foot leash. Do not use a longer retractable leash. On Wednesday, May 6, the Gem Walkers will hold its monthly club meeting at the home of the club president in Yachats. Call for directions if you would like to attend this meet- ing. There will be a leg- stretcher walk at 5 p.m., with the meeting to follow at 6 p.m. For more information or directions, call Jean White in Florence at 541-997-8577. The club website is at www. yachatscoastalgems.org. Local ballers invited to North Bend tourney A basketball tournament will be held at North Bend High School as part of its Jubilee Celebration. Upon registering, players will be matched up with other players from their high school. Age or skill level doesn’t mat- ter; the goal is to come and have a great time. A snack bar will be avail- able. The morning of May 16, however, humans will take center stage as they compete in the Flippers, Feathers and Fins 5K and Kids’ Dash. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to flock to Newport for the annual event, now in its third year. The scenic route winds through the aquarium and along the Yaquina Bay estuary where racers will be greeted with facts about native wildlife. The 5K is open to runners Viks from 1B from sophomore Hannahleah Jakobsen, who placed second in the javelin with a second- place throw of 97-0 and the 200 meters (29.05); sophomore Celie Mans in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.01 for sec- ond place; Tatum with second place in the high jump (4-6) and the 4x100-meter relay team of sophomores Abby Watkins, Elyssa Rose and Jakobsen, along with Miller, who placed second in 4:20.49. All proceeds benefit the animal care and marine science educa- tion programs at the aquarium. Tech race shirts are available to preorder for $5. Shirts will also be available for sale on race day, but size availability may be limited. Racers with strollers are welcome but should be aware the course has uneven ground with some gravel. View from 2B The rankings are already being turned over to some faceless computer, and Madden Football correctly predicted the exact score of the Super Bowl this year. Soon the games will be just another simulation — regu- lated, of course, so we can still gamble on the games and pay taxes. Think Skynet in “The Terminator” ... one day soon, the computers will be self- aware. Augusta National, humani- ty’s final beacon of hope, will be the last to fall as cyborgs overtake Amen Corner, screaming, “Get in the hole!” after every shot. Yet somewhere out there, despite all of the devastation and destruction, at a corner bar somewhere in Schenectady, to a chorus of derisive jeers, a Yankee fan will insist that Jeter was still a better shortstop than Nomar in his prime, and another round will be ordered. www.shoppelocal.biz
