PITTS—Gerald R. Pitts was
born Oct. 17, 1927, in Tomaha,
Okla.
Throu-
ghout his
life, Gerald
was loved
for his hu-
mor, faith in
God
and
service.
He had a Gerald Pitts
verve for
life, family and fishing.
After high school, Gerald
enlisted in the Army Air Corps,
which later became the Air
Force. He served in personnel
for 17 years and retired as a
Master Sargent in 1966.
He loved to tell a story about
when he pulled resources from
Henry Kissinger for the launch
of an Air Force satellite.
Three years into his military
career, Gerald returned home to
Albany, Ore., for a period
before re-enlisting. It was then
that his sister introduced him to
her friend, Verna Jean, who
worked the local soda fountain.
With most of his friends having
moved away, Gerald logged
many hours on a stool at the
soda fountain, and soon he and
Verna Jean were engaged to be
married. They married in 1949
and brought two children into
the world: Gerald Leroy and
Debra Sue.
After retiring from the Air
Force, Gerald worked for
Lockheed Missile and Space.
During his tenure with them,
the family relocated to Kodiak,
Alaska. It was here that Gerald
discovered the last great love
of his life: fishing.
When Gerald returned to
Oregon, he and Verna Jean set-
tled in Florence and he fished
commercially for more than 20
years, captaining two boats —
one of which he sank on a
rough bar and had to be fished
out by the coast guard.
Gerald remained at the helm
of his last boat, The Gypsy,
until heart trouble brought him
ashore and they moved to
Tigard, Ore., to be closer to
family.
Gerald leaves behind a sis-
ter, a devoted wife of 65 years,
two loving children, five
grandchildren, six great-grand-
children
and
numerous
nephews, nieces and friends.
