A Sporting

Time waits
for no one
It’s a rare occasion in life
when you get to witness the
passing of a torch.
Minutes dwindle for the
basketball and hockey stars.
The fabled quarterback gets
handed a clipboard, and the
slugger is told to get a first
baseman’s mitt. The former
tennis champion packs
them in for second-round
matches that would other-
wise have been ignored ...
before exiting stage right.
Golf, however, is a little
more subtle. At this year’s
Masters Tournament, the
legendary Ben Crenshaw
played his last competitive
round. He had won the tour-
nament twice — in 1984
and again in 1995 — the
only majors he had ever
won. Now 63, he decided
this tournament, his 44th,
would be his last. Crenshaw
did not make the cut, and
the Augusta National Golf
Club, polite as ever, did not
post the amiable Texan’s
score.
And while nostalgia
always has its place — par-
ticularly
at
Augusta
National, where names like
Jones, Hogan and Snead
still fall trippingly off the
tongue, and a beer and a
sandwich can be had for
1970s prices — the 2015
edition of the Masters was
about the future of golf.
Heading
into
the
Masters, most of the talk
surrounded three names:
Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy
and Phil Mickelson. A few
might have been wondering
if Bubba Watson could
defend his green jacket, but
mostly, McIlroy’s quest for
a “career grand slam” and
Woods’ promised come-
back special were the domi-
nant themes.
And while everyone was

MID COAST LAKES
The rainbow trout stock-
ing program is in full
swing and most water bod-
ies have been stocked
recently or will be soon
again. Most areas will be
stocked multiple times
until early June. Be sure to
check out the 2015 stock-
ing schedule for the most
up to date information.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can be productive during
the spring months as lake
temperatures start to rise
and fish begin spawning.
Anglers will start finding
more fish up in the shal-
lows over the next month.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is starting to slow
down for the season but
decent numbers of fish are
still around the Whittaker
Creek area. The river
should fish well later in the
week as the river levels
being to drop. Lake Creek
typically clears up more
quickly.

Steelhead
The winter steelhead
fishery is slowing down for
the season down but fair
numbers of fish can still be
found in the upper river,
especially after a rain
event. Native fish tend to
be prevalent this time of
year. Casting lures, bobber
and jig/bait or drifting
beads along the bottom can
be effective techniques.
