Sheriffs make drug arrest
OBITUARY
SAINDON—Leo Saindon,
90, formerly of Florence, died
Monday, Ap-
ril 6, 2015, in
Portland.
Leo was
born Feb. 18,
1925,
in
Quebec,
Canada, to
Ernest and
Leo Saindon J o s e p h i n e
Saindon. His
mother died when he was 5; his
father passed away when Leo
was 15.
Because of these tragedies,
Leo’s formal education ended
in seventh grade. In his early

years, he worked a variety of
jobs, including at a steel
foundry pouring parts for
steam locomotives. Leo hand-
crafted skis and hockey sticks,
and once lathed hundreds of
table legs each day.
In his late 20s, Leo met
switchboard operator Yolande
Turbide. They wed in Riviere-
du-Loup, Quebec, May 3,
1952,
then
moved
to
California.
They lived in San Francisco
and San Leandro, settling in
San Jose after Leo joined IBM
as a tool and die maker in 1965.
Leo spent two decades with
IBM, working in research and
development. He transferred to
Concord, N.C. in 1985, retiring
there in 1987. Leo and Yolande
moved to Florence in 1998,
making many friends at
Florentine Estates.
Recently, they resided at
Cherry Park Plaza, Troutdale
and then Avamere in Sandy.
Leo liked to travel, hike,
fish and camp, was a skilled
woodworker, ran a mach-
ine shop in his garage, and
had a passion for trains.
He devoted hours building
a one-third scale steam loco-
motive, which he operated
at train parks around the
country.

Vote for Siuslaw School Garden
Program to receive grant
The
Siuslaw
School
Garden Program entered the
Seeds of Change Grant Prog-
ram for an opportunity to win
a $20,000 grant. Now, the
school garden program and is
asking the community to get
out and vote for its applica-
tion.
Seeds of Change grants
aim to enhance the environ-
mental, economic and social
well-being of gardens and
communities.
Through April 27, the com-
munity can support the
Siuslaw School Garden
Program by visiting face
book.com/seedsofchange or
w w w. s e e d s o f c h a n g e g r a n t
.com and voting once each
day.
The 50 gardens with the
most public votes then go on
to the final judging.
The
Siuslaw
School
Garden, now in its third year,
currently consists of 12 gar-
den beds at the elementary
school. Four more beds will
be constructed soon.
The gardens are a wonder-
ful opportunity for students to
not only learn about growing
food, but to also meet their
academic standards in a fun
environment.
In the garden they have the
opportunity to learn math,
science, composting, soil
management, writing and
how to be good caretakers of
the land.

Corbett; eight grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren;
a brother, Jean; and sisters

A memorial Mass for Leo
Saindon will be celebrated
today, April 11, at noon, at St.
Michael Catholic Church in
Sandy.
Sandy Funeral Home is han-
dling the arrangements.
Memorial donations may be

horn contacted a male subject
associated with an illegally
parked vehicle on Highway
101 near NW Colorado
Street.
During the contact with the
male subject, identified as Jon
L. Wilkinson, 39, from
Klamath Falls, a substantial
amount of packaged marijuana
was observed inside the vehi-
cle.
Schermerhorn
seized
approximately one pound of
marijuana
and
arrested
Wilkinson on one count of
unlawful possession of mari-
juana.
Wilkinson was lodged at the
Lincoln County jail with bail
set at $50,000.
Wilkinson’s vehicle was
towed from the scene.
