OPRD
debuts new
parks guide
SALEM — Oregon Parks
and Recreation Department
(OPRD) has launched its
2015 Oregon State Parks
Guide, a free, full-color,
magazine-style brochure fea-
turing detailed information
about more than 200 of
Oregon’s most popular state
campgrounds, day-use areas,
trails, bikeways and heritage
sites.
“This is a beautiful
overview, but it’s just a place
to start,” said Chris Havel,
spokesperson for OPRD.
“Most parks, and many
campgrounds, are open all
year. The real adventure
begins when you get up, go
out and explore.”
The guide has been thor-
oughly updated for 2015,
with revised or expanded list-
ings for each property, an
enlarged statewide map and
up-to-date reservation infor-
mation.
Special icons denote parks
with pet-friendly yurts or
cabins, day-use parking fees,
scenic views and other fea-
tures, as well as facilities that
are accessible to people with
disabilities.
Feature stories highlight
lighthouses, tidepools, hiker
and biker camps, and winter
recreation opportunities.
The guide is available in
print from OPRD’s offices in
Salem and Portland, at state
parks, by mail order at 800-
551-6949 and online at www.
oregonstateparks.org.

The rainbow trout stock-
ing program is in full
swing and most water bod-
ies have been stocked
recently or will be soon
again. Most areas will be
stocked multiple times
until early June. Be sure to
check out the 2015 stock-
ing schedule for the most
up to date information.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can be productive during
the spring months as lake
temperatures start to rise
and fish begin spawning.
Anglers will start finding
more fish up in the shal-
lows over the next month.

Viking girls finish
first; boys team places
fifth at 12-team meet
1500-meter (5:04.30) races. Siuslaw
also got wins from sophomore
Destinie Tatum, who ran the 400-
meter in 1:03.97 for first place, as well
as sophomore Carissa Oliver in the
discus (112-10) and sophomore Abby
Watkins in the long jump with a PR
mark at 16-04.
Tatum, Watkins and Oliver also
scored in other events, including third
place in the 100-meter race (13.92) for
Watkins; third place in both the 200
meters (29.04) and high jump (4-08)

The Viking girls’ track team left the
starting blocks at Saturday’s Junction
City Invitational and never looked
back, outscoring the second-place
Tigers by more than 200 points by the
final event.
The Lady Viks won five individual
titles on the day in a variety of events,

Cormorant hazing aims to protect young fish
ODFW program focuses
on six estuaries where
fish are threatened
Hazing of double-crested cor-
morants is set to begin soon in several
areas along the Oregon coast to
improve survival of juvenile salmon
and steelhead.
Double-crested cormorants are
goose-sized, fish-eating waterbirds
that occur throughout Oregon, and are
particularly prevalent in the state’s
estuaries during through September.
Research indicates cormorants may
eat significant numbers of juvenile
salmon and steelhead that migrate to
the ocean during this time.
To reduce threat to young fish, the
Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife is working with several non-
profit and local governmental organi-
zations to haze cormorants in six
coastal estuaries over the next two to
four months.
Hazing will involve driving at the
birds in small boats and, in some estu-
aries, firing at them with small
pyrotechnics.
Hazing workers are being provided
by the Clatsop County Fisheries
Project, Port of Nehalem, Port of
Bandon, North Coast Salmon and
Steelhead Enhancement Fund, and
Alsea Sportsmen’s Association.
ODFW will provide a portion of the
funding and program oversight, and
will conduct some hazing operations
itself to protect hatchery releases on
Young’s Bay on the Columbia River.
Hazing began April 1 and will con-
tinue through May 31 in the Nehalem,
Nestucca and Coquille river estuaries
and in Tillamook and Alsea bays.
