Presbyterians announce new choir
director Paul Guthmuller
The Presbyterian Church of
the Siuslaw has hired new
choir direc-
tor, Dr. Paul
Guthmuller.
He will
start work
the day after
Easter with
his

He is also
interim di-rector of the
Florence Com-munity Chorus.
Guthmuller received his
Bachelor of Arts degree at
Rutgers University in music
education. He was very active
in off-Broadway musical the-
ater.
He earned his master’s
degree in vocal music from the
Peabody Conservatory of
John’s Hopkins University. He
became a sought-after church
soloist
and
sang
with
Baltimore Opera and local
musical theater.
Guthmuller
moved
to
Eugene in 1988 to pursue an
advanced degree in vocal
music and was awarded a doc-
torate of music arts in 1998.
He was director of music at
Mt. Tabor Methodist Church in
Portland and Central Pres-
byterian Church in Eugene. He
has been a teacher of voice,
opera and choral music at the
University of Oregon, Oregon
State University and Southern
Oregon University.
Guthmuller said he and his
wife, Carrie, are thrilled to
come to the central coast to
live, work and worship.
The choir is open to anyone
who enjoys worshipping God
through music.

Scholarship applications are
now available for the Florence
Area Community Coalition
Scholarship. Seniors from Si-
uslaw or Mapleton high
schools are invited to apply for
the $500 scholarship to be
awarded at the FACC
Community Volunteer Recog-
nition Event at the Florence
Events Center on April 15,
from 2 to 4 p.m.
The scholarship can be used
for two-year or four-year insti-
tutions of higher education or
technical schools.
Applications are available at
both high schools.
Tickets for the annual
Soroptimist Rose Sale are
available through April 20, for
$20 per dozen.
Delivery will be April 29.
Proceeds fund the scholar-
ships awarded to local stu-
dents.
Roses can be delivered to
the recipient at home or work.
Tickets can be purchased
from any Soroptimist or by
calling Jo Hine at 541-997-
2233.

The Florence Area Democ-
ratic Club will meet Saturday,
April 4, at 11 a.m., in the Port
of Siuslaw meeting room.

The Mapleton Lions Club
will host an Easter pancake
breakfast on Sunday, April 5,

Rhody Society early
flower show set
The
Siuslaw
Early
Rhododendron Show will be
April 11 and 12. In addition to
exhibiting flowers, rhododen-
drons and azaleas will be for
sale.
The exhibit will include
azaleas, rhododendrons and
Bonsai. The show is free and
open to the public from 1 to 5
p.m. on Saturday and from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
