During the March 12 meet-
ing, Dunes City Planning
Commission Chairman Paul
Gargis urged the Dunes City
council to expedite the sign-
ing and implementation of
the city’s revised septic
ordinance as soon as poss-
ible.
“It’s like we have come to
a dead stop,” Gargis said.
“Every week the planning
commission has to be here.
I’d like to know where the
ordinance is at today?
What still needs to be accom-
plished?”
“There is a laundry list of
20 to 30 things that still have
to be done,” City Admin-
istrator Fred Hilden said.
“We are working through it as
quickly as we can.”
Hilden also said city staff
would try and have that infor-
mation to Gargis in time
for the next planning com-
mission meeting.

Roger Cunningham
told Gargis that the council
was consulting with city
attorneys to make sure
there would be no problems
with
the
language
of
the revised ordinance.
“I can assure you we
are doing it as fast as we pos-
sibly can. As we get farther
along,
the
dates
and
time lines will become
more evident to you and
everyone,” Ruede said. “We
set a deadline of June
30, 2016, as a goal to be com-
pleted. That’s about all
the specifics I can give you
right now.”
Councilor Maurice Sanders
reported that the road
commission is short of volun-
teers.
He said the commission
met, but did not have a quo-
rum.
He voiced concern that
the commission might be los-
ing one or two more members
and that Dunes City might
not have a road commission
in the near future.
He also told the council
that the road commission
would likely be submitting
requests for approximately
$100,000
in
structural
repairs.
He warned of the begin-
ning of a downward spiraling
structural deficit.
“The day is coming, and it
is coming sooner than you
think, that this city will have
to decide whether it wants to
have a tax base to operate
government services at a city
level or not. If it doesn’t, it
will not be able to function
with the revenue it has.
“This council needs to be
looking at the future, not
just next year, but the next
three to five years,” Sanders
said.
In other business, Hilden
said the Dunes City website
had been hacked, most likely
by overseas hackers, in order
to spam outbound emails. He
said the city has switched to a
new, more secure host-
ing service that “ended up
saving the city about $300
to $400 per year.”
