Volunteer divers’ submerged service entails a variety of tasks, including scrubbing acrylic, wielding a thigh-sized vacuum hose or observing ani- mal behavior. Thousands of venomous rockfish, curious halibut or more than 100 sharks keep them company depending on which Passages of the Deep exhibit they work in that day. Many SCUBA divers instead choose to flock to trop- ical destinations or book shore dives at places like aquariums, where calm conditions and the opportunity to view wildlife are guaranteed. At the Oregon Coast Aquarium, approximately 150 volunteer divers travel from as far as Vancouver, Wash., to splash in the exhibits.
