“A number of the students
actually told me that they had
written papers on different
chapters in my book. It was
really fun to hear. I hadn’t been
quite expecting that,” he said.
His two interpreters, Seon A,
a master’s degree candidate,
and Soon Yang, a Ph.D. candi-
date, are both studying voca-
tional rehabilitation in Seoul.
“They were very well-versed
and had both done papers on
my book. They asked me a lot
of questions. ... They asked me
to write down a sentence for
them to remember to think
about as they move forward in
their careers. I was just really
taken aback. It was quite nice
that they asked me,” he said.
He got the chance to experi-
ence South Korea in ways he
never expected.
“The first night they had
scheduled a special traditional
Korean dinner with a whole
bunch of the conference organ-
izers ... in the old part of Seoul,
down little narrow alleyways.
I’d never be able to find it again
in a million years. They brought
out traditional Korean food,
about 30 different dishes, and
we were there for hours drink-
ing rice wine. It was a great
time,” he said.
Besides eating Korean food,
Wiegan also took the chance to
sightsee. Seon A and Soon Yang
accompanied him for three
extra days as his guides and
interpreters, even taking him
past the American Embassy
within a day of the attack there.
“We toured for 12 hours a
day and walked so many miles.
I saw so many things I wouldn’t
be able to begin to find on my
own,” he said.
The size of the city was
immense. With 24.5 million
people, Seoul is the second
largest metropolitan area in the
world.
“It’s like 24-1/2 Portlands,”
he said. “It just went on and on
and on forever.”
