March 28 is the Spring
Oregon Beach Cleanup, spon-
sored by SOLVE.
The organization, founded in
1969 by Oregon Gov. Tom
McCall, began beach cleanups
in October 1984.
SOLVE first went by Stop
Oregon Litter and Vandalism
(SOLV), but updated its name
and mission in 2012 to, “Solve:
It’s our nature to volunteer.”
It leads more than 50,000
volunteers across the state in
cleaning up natural resources.
Now, the coastline is split
into 14 zones, with zone cap-
tains leading beach captains,
who then organize volunteers at
each site.
Craig Filip is the zone cap-
tain for Zone 9 and leads the
beach captains for cleanups at
Heceta Beach, Siltcoos River
outlet, Florence South Jetty,
North Jetty beach and the Carl
G. Washburne picnic area.
The events run simultane-
ously from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
