SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 2015 Lutherans to host Messiah Passover demonstration Messiah in the Passover, a vivid demonstration showing how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feast of Passover, will be held March 26, at 7 p.m., at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 85294 Highway 101. The demonstration will last about 1-1/2 hours and will be conducted by Dr. Jack Meadows of Chosen People Ministries. Chosen People Ministries is a 100-year-old mission that was founded in 1894 by Leopold Cohn, a Hungarian Rabbi who came to believe that Jesus is the Messiah promised by the Hebrew Scriptures. From humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York, Chosen People Ministries has grown into a worldwide ministry to “the Jew first and to the Gentile.” Messiah in the Passover begins with the traditional Passover Seder table complete with all the articles of this important Jewish celebration. The speaker will explain the symbolic meanings of the var- ious items of the Passover feast and highlight their rela- tionship to the Last Supper that Messiah celebrated with the disciples, giving special emphasis on the redemptive significance of the crucifixion. The demonstration gives the Christian community insight into Jewish traditions so that the Jewish roots of Christianity can be better understood. This program also helps the Jewish and Christian communities understand their common heritage. This meeting is open to the public. For more information or to reserve a place at a table (there is only space for 60 partici- pants), call Pastor Dan Wurster at 541-997-8038 or 541-999-7261. A love offering will be received. How to instantly increase your joy Every word that comes out of our mouths has power in it- creative or destructive, positive or negative. Proverbs 18:21 (AMP) says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” So whether we murmur and complain or give thanks and keep a positive attitude, we are feeding our body, mind and spirit. So if you’re not enjoying your life, the best thing you can do is think about what you’ve been talking about. First Peter 3:10 says, “For let him who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good- whether apparent or not] keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from guile (treachery, deceit).” Our joy is connected to what we say. And one of the ways we can instantly increase our joy is to stop talking about all of our problems. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situa- tion, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which tran- scends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” These verses show us that when we put our faith in God, we can stay in peace in every situation in our lives. The ques- tion is, when we pray and ask God to change something in our lives, are we releasing our faith? We need to understand that the moment we pray, God goes to work on that situation. And after we pray, what we say while we’re waiting to see the answer to our prayer is very, very important. So pray and then say something to enhance your prayers — speak faith- filled words. After I pray, I set myself to believe that God is working no matter what I see… no matter what it feels like. Bible Study 7:00pm seems nothing is happening, that’s when God is doing what we need the most. Another way we can instant- ly increase our joy is by using our words to encourage those around us. Proverbs 18:20 (AMP) says, “A man’s [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the con- sequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil].” Every word is like a seed and it brings some kind of harvest in our lives. If you give others joy with your words, you will increase your own joy. If you want to enjoy your life, let God use you to make other people happy. Because the happier you make other people, the happier you will be. Encouraging words can also bring healing, by simply saying things like “I appreciate you. Forgive me. I’m sorry and I was wrong.” I was not what I would call a natural encourager, but I made a commitment to God years ago to start encouraging people on purpose. Now I ask God every day, “Who can I encour- age today? How can I build someone up?” It's amazing how much better life can be when you give someone an encouraging word every day. We can also increase our joy by being thankful and saying it. Psalm 100:4 says, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His name!” Thank God for every bless- ing that you can think of. Every morning I like to have what I call a “blessing session.” It’s when I take time to thank God for working in my life. One thing I’ve learned is when we’re waiting for a break- through, we need to thank Him for working on that situation behind the scenes. I don’t believe we can change all of our circumstances into pleasant ones by making positive confessions, but we can increase our joy and peace in the midst of them when we choose to speak in agreement with God and learn to say what He says. Soups On to discuss world of existence On Monday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m., everyone is invited to join a group from diverse spiritual paths who enjoy dis- cussing a variety of spiritual topics. This week, they will begin a study of the world of exis- tence. The Baha’i Writings say: “...There are many worlds of light. For even as the plant imagines life ends with itself and has no knowledge of our existence, so the materially- minded man has no knowledge of other worlds of conscious- ness...” The evening will begin with bowls of potato soup, fruit, homemade warm bread and vegetables, followed by the evening’s topic until 8:30 p.m. The gathering will end with prayers for the requests left in the prayer pole in the garden of the Florence Playhouse and those shared by the group. Everyone is invited to attend. The Heintz home is located at 875 Seventh St. For more information, call Suzanne at 541-590-0779. UU to discuss spring equinox this Sunday Florence Unitarian Universalist minister Dr. Ruth Miller will deliver a message for this Sunday, March 22, titled “Spring Equinox and the Interdependent Web of Life.” Worship service begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 11 a.m. with refreshments and fellowship. “As we experience this turn- ing of the year, we see the re- emergence of many life forms that had all but disappeared during the cold of winter — and begin to see their effects on us and the rest of the world,” said Miller. “How is it that a fungus is as important to our wellbeing as the people we love? “What’s going on in our bodies in response to this experience of the renewing of life?” All are welcome to attend worship services. The UU Fellowship is locat- ed at 87738 Highway 101, at Heceta Beach Road, and is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit www.florenceuuf.org, or call 541-997-2840.
