The disposal day in May
will be held on the second
Saturday, May 9, so as not to
conflict with Rhody Days.
The current cost to dispose a
standard pickup truck load or
small utility trailer (single axle
or less) of yard debris is $10;
medium utility trailer (10-12
feet in length) is $15; and a
large utility trailer (greater
than 12 feet in length) is $20.
For loads larger than 20
cubic yards, the cost is $20
plus $5/yard over.
Debris loads must be tied,
tarped, secured or covered in
the vehicle or trailer in a man-
ner that prevents any material
from leaving the vehicle or
trailer while in motion.
After the yard debris is
dropped off, the city twice
annually chips the yard debris
into a mulch product that will
be used in our Class A
biosolids composting program.
The mulch is mixed with the
biosolids from the wastewater
treatment plant, and is com-
posted in a covered aerated
static pile. Once composted,
the Class A composted
biosolids, named “FloGro,”
becomes a valuable resource
that is rich in plant-essential
nutrients and organic matter.
Using composted biosolids
improves soil health and
allows the soil to hold more
water, while also letting it
drain and breathe better.
Composting enables the city
to utilize a valuable resource
that would otherwise go
to waste. Florence completed a
pilot program in 2011,
then officially started com-
posting and had its first
“batch” ready in February
2013.
This is one of the many proj-
ects the city has created to
make Florence a more sustain-
able and eco-friendly commu-
nity. During 2015, the city will
be offering ‘FloGro’ free to the
public on a first come, first
served basis.
Watch for future announce-
ments on the date and times of
the giveaways on the City of
Florence website at www.ci.
