ODOT, OSP partner for spring break traffic safety
The Oregon State Police
(OSP) and Oregon Department
of Transportation (ODOT) are
teaming up to keep spring
break travelers safe on
Oregon’s roads this year.
Together, they hope to make
this a safe and memorable trav-
el time. Travel safety involves
taking responsibility for your
own behaviors as well as
watching out for one another.
It also means:
• Observing the rules of the
road
• Seeing and being seen
• Focusing on the task at
hand so you can make smart
choices while being aware of
what others on the road are
doing.
How do ODOT and OSP
plan to help keep roads safe?
They will focus their efforts on
the things that contribute most
to serious injury or fatal crash-
es. Last year during spring
break (March 23-29), OSP
troopers more than 2,700 stops
for violations of its Fatal-5
traffic enforcement priorities.
The Fatal-5 includes speed,
occupant safety, lane safety,
impaired driving and distract-
ed driving — or SOLID.
“This kind of driving behav-
ior creates the biggest risk to
people’s safety on our road-
ways,” said OSP superintend-
ent Rich Evans. “Focusing on
SOLID priorities makes the
biggest impact on traffic safe-
ty.”
If you get stopped for talk-
ing or texting while driving,
you will get a ticket; phone in
one hand, ticket in the other.
Whether you are driving,
riding, walking, motorcycling,
skateboarding — whatever
Lane County
Transfer Sites
will maintain
winter hours
In an effort to reduce
costs, seven Lane County
Waste
Transfer
Sites
will continue with the cur-
rent winter schedule year
round.
The move comes at a time
when Lane County is contin-
uing to face significant rev-
enue shortfalls.
The seven sites that will
not switch to the expanded
summer
schedule
are:
London, Low Pass, Maple-
ton, Sharps Creek, Swiss-
home, McKenzie Bridge and
Walton.
These sites will remain
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
throughout the year.
In the past, these sites
have expanded their hours of
operation to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
in the summer to accommo-
date the increased demand
from customers.
This
measure
will
save Lane County approxi-
mately $12,000 annually in
personnel costs and reduce
the need to hire additional
help
to
staff
these
sites throughout the year.
Lane County operates
17 waste transfer and recy-
cling sites throughout the
County. The sites not men-
tioned here will switch to
summer hours starting April
1.
For a complete list of
Lane County Waste Transfer
Sites with hours and days of
operation, visit the waste
disposal site at www.lane
county.org.

your mode — be on the look-
out for others, and make it
easier for everyone else to see
you, too.
You may be following the
rules, but in most interactions
between a car and a ped-
estrian,
the
pedestrian
loses.
The same goes for bicy-
clists. Be alert, be considerate;
see and be seen.
The state of Oregon is a fan-
tastic place to spend spring
break, with its natural beauty,
fun cities and towns, and
everything in between.
Here are some smart tips to
keep those experiences enjoy-
able:
• www.tripcheck.com — Al-
ways start with a quick check
of road conditions, hazards and
delays.
• Equipment — double
check tire pressure, oil levels
and fluids before you traveling
so you don’t become a hazard.
• Make time for pit stops —
a safety rest area can educate,
refresh and inspire a great
vacation.
• Don’t forget the common
sense — OSP sergeant Dave
Aydelotte of the Gold Beach
Office reminds everyone that
car-clouting thieves will
always take advantage of an
easy opportunity; conceal any
valuables.
Over the past five years,
Oregon has averaged seven
fatalities and 25 major injuries
during the week of spring
break (includes two week-
ends), and the most common
kinds of crashes where a vehi-
cle goes off the road and hits
something, or head-on colli-
sions.
Four of the 36 total fatalities
that occurred over the past five
spring breaks involved pedes-
trians.
Be safe and travel smart.
