At the Oregon Coast Aquarium, folks will find none of that necessary. Interpretive volunteers collectively connect with over 400,000 visitors each year. There are, of course, holes in the theory. For one, it implies that the flux capacitor, a Y-shaped set of three incan- descent lamps set in a box that makes time travel possible, has been invented, and that Marty McFly has successfully harnessed the power of light- ning, traveled both forward and backward in time and imparted this knowledge to us. But at least we know that the robot vacuum kind of works. Even the hover board seems plausible, more plausi- ble than a team stocked with confident rookies announcing their plans to win the National League Central. Even their new manager, the astute Joe Maddon, has taken to calling the Cubs’ spring training “Cub University.” They can be like Royals, they say. You know, young and optimistic. They can win it all if they want, history be damned. “Hey, that’s what we expect mals and their environments is no simple task, which is why the Oregon Coast Aquarium treats its volunteer recruits to a six-weekend crash course, which starts on April 4, on the coastal and marine fauna of Oregon. Upon graduation, these vol- unteers spend a few hours each week speaking on behalf of Oregon’s marine animals and their environments to aquarium visitors. This exposure pro- vides people a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact for their local environ- ment, and the ocean on a glob- al scale. “When a volunteer connects with a visitor about a particular animal, or a conservation issue like marine debris, they make an impression that may last a lifetime,” said Beth Hawkyard, Volunteer Services Manager for the Aquarium. Additional perks for aquari- um volunteers include: • Complimentary Aquarium membership. • Invitations to participate in exclusive lectures and continu- ing education programs. • A behind-the-scenes look at a marine science exhibition facility that is consistently ranked among the 10 best in the U.S. • Subscription to the month- ly newsletter, The Upwelling. • Discounts at the Wildlife Trading Company gift shops in the aquarium. • The opportunity to join rank with nearly 350 other out- standing volunteers that share a passion for marine science. To learn how to become one of the newest voices of Oregon’s marine and coastal environments, visit www. aquarium.org or contact the aquarium’s Volunteer Services department at volunteer@ aquarium.org. and How from the menu. ODFW Family Fishing events along the coast include: North Coast • April 18, Hebo, Hebo Lake, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. • May 2, Vernonia, Vernonia Pond, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mid-Coast • May 16, Waldport, Eckman Lake, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. • June 6, Florence, Cleawox Lake, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. South Coast • April 18, Coos Bay, Middle Empire Lake, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. • June 6, Lakeside, Eel Lake in Tugman State Park, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and that’s what we believe,” Cubs first basemen Anthony Rizzo told reporters this spring. “And that’s what we’re going to do,” he adds. And that’s where the road ends. For the past five years, it's led to fifth place. Maybe this year, with guys like Jon Lester on the mound, a proper sense of history will take hold. Lester, born in the ’80s and a party to the Red Sox exor- cism, averages 16 wins per year, and that’s usually how far out of first place the Cubs are. Vegas has them at 14-1 odds. Marty McFly’s Cubs were listed as 100-1 longshots. Of course, they were said to have beaten Miami in a five-game sweep, something pretty much impossible to do today, but as they say, tomorrow never knows, and when you’re at a Cubs game this summer, sit- ting back with an Old Style and a "sassage," you won’t care where the road leads ... perdition be damned. From Mesa to the Northside you don't need roads. The Cubs are eternal winners in the mind’s eye. Do your part and volunteer today to help support these local non-proft organizations in our community!
