OBITUARIES
AMBROSIO—Sandra Rae
Ambrosio, 70, of Florence,
passed away
in her home
surrounded
by
family
on Feb. 12,
2015.
She was
born
in
Fifield, Wis.,
Sandra
on Dec. 12,
Ambrosio
1944,
to
Raymond Schreiner and Edna
Bertha Schreiner.
In the early 1950s, they
moved to Denver, where she
went to school and met her
future husband, Victor “Dusty”
Ambrosio, when she was 11
years old.
They married in 1962 and
had two daughters, Vicki Renee
and Denice Rae Ambrosio.
After moving to Oregon in
1966, Sandy went to work for a
jewelry store and that started
her lifelong love for gemstones
and handmade jewelry, beading
and crafts of all kinds.
While living in Portland,
Sandy was a passionate volun-
teer during the Rose Festival
festivities, making floats of
flowers, seeds and other organ-
ic items.
With her daughters always at
her side, Sandy paved the way
for them to live creative lives
that always think outside the
box .
In 1971, Sandy helped open
the first Oregon Liquor Store in
a shopping Mall (Mall 205)
with some good friends.
She then helped open an
Open Air Hot-tubbing business
with another family friend
before moving with her family
to Florence in 1984.
They purchased Darlings
Resort and Marina on Siltcoos
Lake and for 20 years they had
great fun with the locals, made
life-long friends, and met inter-
esting people from all over the
world.
After selling the resort,
Sandy was enjoying retirement
until a stroke in 2008 left her
left side paralyzed. For the last
six years, Sandy worked harder
than ever to overcome her
handicap.
She was avid in water aero-
bics for her recovery. She was
a great inspiration to others
who had suffered the same
debilitating condition by
encouraging them to get into
the water and let their body feel
free.
In August 2014, she had a
total knee replacement surgery
on her “good” knee. It was a
success and it was great to see
her walk without pain.
But in October, an undiag-
nosed gallstone blocked her
pancreas. This acute pancreati-
tis is what ended her life just
when she was getting ready to
flourish.
She is survived by her sisters
Gloria McGill of Modesto,
Calif., and Debra Guyette of
Reedsport; her grandchildren:
Nathan Ambrosio Sherman,
Gates Robert Witten, Jeffrey
Daniel Anderson and Harmony
Ann Anderson, all of Florence;
and her border collie, Zoe, who
was a good companion and
looked after her during her
stroke recovery.
Siblings preceding her death
were her oldest sister, Norma
Acker, and beloved brother
Robert Schreiner.
A service honoring her life
will be held at the Florence
Elks Lodge on Saturday, March
7, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Anyone wishing to pay their
respects is welcome to attend.
