Florence Emergency Cold Weather Shelter volunteers Laureen MacDonald, Kate King, Linda Castro and Jan
Hirsch display new shelter flags to be flown during inclement weather to announce that the shelter is open.
The flags will be posted at the shelter van pickup locations around Florence, including Fred Meyer, Safeway,
Siuslaw Public Library and south of Siuslaw River Bridge. Two larger flags will be placed in front of the
Masonic Lodge, the shelter’s home base, located south of Florence at 84910 Highway 101. Flag poles were
provided by Kiwanis Club of Florence.

Ron Caputo, commissioners
met Jan. 8 to review the
port’s five-year strategic busi-
ness plan and establish
priorities for the next three
years.
In addition, one of the top
priorities set by the commis-
sion this year is to seek
new funding sources to help
reduce existing port debt
and establish a reserve fund for
future work projects.
Caputo reported that expan-
sion and improvements made
to the RV Park would help
keep the park operating near
capacity during the summer
and fall months, making the
park a strong income source for
the port.
Another priority set by the
commission is the addition of a
new restroom at the east sec-
tion of the park.
The report stated the port
would continue to work with
state and federal delegations,
the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers and the U.S. Coast
Guard to keep the Siuslaw
River channel open and
push for needed repairs to the
jetties.
The commissioners, accord-
ing to the report, will continue
to support the local commercial
fishing fleet and attract more
boats and fish-related business-
es to the commercial boat basin
in Old Town. The commission-
ers also will continue to sup-
port all other fishing-related
enterprises in the port district,
including fishing charters,
sports fishing and kayakers.
Caputo ended the report with
assurances that the port will
continue to work with local
businesses and governmental
agencies to create new oppor-
tunities for increased economic
development.
‘Our Town’ photo exhibit complements play
During March, the Last
Resort Players’ theatrical
production of “Our Town” will
be in collaboration with the
Florence Events Center gal-
leries.
Works by local photogra-
phers and artists capturing
“Life in Our Town” will be
exhibited.
Entries will either follow
WEDNESDAY THUIRSDAY
the themes of the play – every-
day living, love and marriage
and the reality of death – or
will focus on our own town of
Florence.
The glass case will also offer
3-D artwork.
LRP’s “Our Town” will be
presented on March 20 and 21
at 7 p.m., and 22 at 2 p.m.
It will be repeated on March
27 and 28 at 7 p.m., and March
29, at 2 p.m.
The three-act play has
two intermissions, and the
audiences will be able
to enhance their theatrical
experience by visiting Gallery
One in the FEC during inter-
missions to reflect on the art-
work and its relation to the
play.
