MID COAST LAKES:
NBHS GIRLS : 52 SHS: 25
NBHS BOYS : 56 SHS: 31
The rainbow trout stock-
ing program began in many
mid coast lakes in early
February. Be sure to check
out the 2015 stocking
schedule for the most up to
date information. Fishing
for the various warm water
fish species can still be
productive during the win-
ter months but anglers may
need to target different
areas of a lake (typically
deeper) versus when fish-
ing in the spring or sum-
mer.
The Viking girls opened
Friday’s final home stand of
the season as Siuslaw hosted
North Bend. Though in both
match-ups the Vikings had no
chance of making a post-sea-
son appearance, spectators
were hard pressed to tell the
difference as players from
both Siuslaw teams battled
for an upset — and the
chance to play spoiler.
In the girls’ game, after
entering halftime trailing 25-
10, Siuslaw rallied to within
nine after scoring the first
seven points of the third
quarter with shooting from
senior Halee Richards and
sophomores Destinie Tatum
and Elyssa Rose. The Vikings
went 9-for-11 from the chari-
ty line in the period before
the Bulldogs were able to
pull away into a 12-point lead
to start the fourth period.
Viking
junior
guard
Mikaela Siegel scored the
first basket of the quarter, fol-
lowed by a no-look pass from
junior guard Sierra Potter to
Tatum to put Siuslaw back
within nine points.
But North Bend got hot

or members of this season’s
Mapleton basketball team,
including its three seniors —
Chris Free, Tucker Ford and Jack
Hardisty — it was the first time any of
them had been this far into the play-
offs.
For that reason alone, the Sailors
stepped onto the court at Northwest
Christian College against Lowell as
winners.
Taking on the Devils for a chance to
advance into the state playoffs was
icing on the cake.
“It has been an amazing first season
as head coach,” said Mapleton coach
Will Crook. “These guys battled every
game, all season.”
Coming into Saturday’s game,
Crook said the team knew that Lowell
lived and died by its 3-point shooting.
“We were prepared but couldn’t
execute as well as we had hoped,”
said Crook. “I have never seen a team
shoot 3-pointers that well in a game.”
Senior forward Chris Free scored
the first six points of the game as the
Sailors fought for the advantage. As
expected, Lowell’s ability to score
from outside kept the Sailors in a
come-from-behind position as senior
Tucker Ford spent the first half dis-
tributing the ball from the point posi-
tion, scoring just two points but con-
tributing through assists.
As a result, seniors Jack Hardisty
and Free were able to penetrate and
keep things close as the game entered
the half with Mapleton trailing by a
single basket, 16-14.
“Tucker’s performance in the first
half was as good as it gets,”
