Siuslaw sends three wrestlers to state mats
All three Viking
grapplers will
make first state

After two days of wrestling
the region’s best, three of
Siuslaw’s six wrestlers will
advance to the state mats in
Portland at the end of the
month.
It’s a ratio Siuslaw coach
Neil Wartnik says reflects the
tremendous growth his small
team has experienced this sea-
son.
“To go through what this
team went through over the
course of the season, and rise
above the odds by remaining
focused is very satisfying,”
Wartnik said after last week-
end’s regionals at Marshfield
High School.
The best wrestlers from both
the Far West and Skyline
leagues went head-to-head dur-
ing two days of intense compe-
tition, with the top four
wrestlers from each bracket
advancing to state Feb. 28-29.
“To send three out of six
wrestlers to state in a division
like this is tremendous,” said
Wartnik.
The Vikings went into the
regional tournament with four
seeded wrestlers, including

its January 23-25 meeting in
Indianapolis.
These changes were subse-

It took less than two quarters for the
Siuslaw girls to take complete control
of their match-up on the road at South
Umpqua on Friday night. Between
sophomores Claire Waggoner, Elyssa
Rose and Destinie Tatum, the Vikings
were able to post 30 points, with
Waggoner leading all scoring with a
season-high 14 points against the
Lancers.
By halftime, Siuslaw had estab-
lished an dominant 33-7 lead and
maintained that pace toward a lop-
sided 52-18 win for the Viks’ second
league victory.
Along with Waggoner’s 14 points,
Siuslaw got six points, seven blocked
shots and 10 rebounds from Rose, as
well as nine points from Tatum.
That same night, Marshfield fell to
undefeated Brookings-Harbor (8-0),
56-38, and second-place Douglas (6-
2) got the drop on North Bend, 46-38.
At 2-6, the Lady Viks are currently
in fifth place in the Far West as the
regular season wraps up this Friday at
home against North Bend.
In the Viking boys game, a 26-point
scoring run by the Lancers in the first
half put a win out of reach for Siuslaw
as the Lancers, tied for third place in
the FWL at 4-4, went on to win it, 81-
50.
North Bend leads the league at 8-0,
followed by Marshfield (7-0), with a
tie for third between South Umpqua
and Brookings-Harbor (4-4).
Friday’s home game against the
Bulldogs begins with the girls at 6
p.m., followed by the boys’ game.
