6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2015 Have a ‘Blind Date’ at library this month The Siuslaw Public Library will be celebrating Valentine’s Day the entire month of February by offering blind dates with books. Come into the library to arrange one of these mystery dates. Perhaps the date will even be a mystery. Or the sur- prise might be historical or lit- erary fiction, a young adult novel or a biography. In any case, the library invites you to spend time with a delightful new author or explore a genre different from your usual selections. And you are not limited to one date dur- ing the month. You can have as many blind dates during the month as you can fit into your schedule. Every night during the month of February can be date night. Garden Club seeks scholarship applications The Florence Garden Club invites local Siuslaw and Mapleton High School seniors to apply for the Garden Club scholarship for the 2014-2015 school year. Applicants must be planning a post-high school career in horticulture or a related field, such as forestry or environmental science. Awards are typically $1,000 or more. Applications are available through high school counseling departments. Deadline for applying is April 1. Since the first scholarship was awarded in 1994, more than $47,000 has been distrib- uted to local students. The Garden Club raises funds throughout the year from donations, raffles and the spring community plant sale. Florence and Mapleton area merchants have contributed merchandise and services for raffles as well as monetary donations to the club for schol- arship fund raising. The Florence Garden Club was formed in 1949 to improve the community and to promote the knowledge of hor- ticulture. The club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church on Highway 101 in Florence. Oregon State Police accepting applications Ever thought you would make a good cop? Ever thought you had what it takes to be one of the best cops? To better serve qualified applicants, OSP is scheduling two separate entry-level testing sessions: Saturday, March 14 and Monday, March 16. Both sessions will be held at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, 4190 Aumsville Highway SE, in Salem. Applicants should prepare beforehand for entry-level test- ing.
