You can talk to me all
you want about metrics, but
if you were inches from
death, whom would you
want under center?
Yeah, that’s the question
I readily quick-snap into the
face of anyone approaching
me with this “Tom Brady is
the best quarterback ever”
nonsense.
If your life depended on
it, who would you want to
start the next game? Don’t
wait for the translation ...
answer the question with
Joe Montana and move
along.
This notion — the game
of a lifetime — reminds me
of Doug Williams, quarter-
back of the Washington
Redskins, and how he
found himself without a
running back the evening
before the biggest game of
his life, Super Bowl XXII
in 1988.
One can only imagine the
anxiety Williams, the first
black quarterback to start a
Super Bowl, felt before the
game. The Redskins’ oppo-
nent was the Broncos of
Denver led by John Elway
and Dan Reeves — two
warriors still smarting over
last year’s humiliating loss

The Sailors continued their steady
move up the Mountain West League
standings and toward a potential play-
off spot Tuesday with a solid win over
Alsea.
With senior forward Jack Hardisty
&

back in the line-up, Mapleton has
added more amunition to its offensive
arsenal.
Sinking four 3-pointers from deep
in the field, Hardesty led the Sailors in
scoring with 15 points. Defensively,
Hardesty picked up a pair of steals,
with the Sailors claiming 13 turnovers
thanks to the quick hands of senior
guards Tucker Ford and Chris Free
with three steals each, as well as two
steals each from sophomores Hunter
Simington and Daniel Collins.
“We swarmed Alsea’s defense,”
said Mapleton coach Will Crook. “We
needed a win to put ourselves in a bet-
ter position in the post season, and we
were able to accomplish that goal.”
The Sailors’ defense was able to
hold the Wolverines to just 16 points
